Magic: The Gatheringhas had a long list of characters during its lifetime. While each had their own part to play during Magic’s story, few mattered as much as the Planeswalkers, powerful individuals who could traverse the many planes of the Multiverse. Due to the nature of Magic’s story, most of the narrative design centers around these Planeswalkers, following them in their dealings with the many planar threats that threaten Magic’s larger universe.

However, what is unique about Magic’s Planeswalkers is that anyone can be one; they just have to awaken their Planeswalker spark. As a result, any existing character in Magic’s history can theoretically become a Planeswalker, making for some interesting options that could greatly expand both Magic’s narrative story and gameplay.

6Sigarda: Humanity’s Angel Protector

Sigarda is one of the few surviving angels in Innistrad after the events of the Eldrazi invasion. As such, she has become a very important character in the story of Innistrad and is even held in high regard by Sorin Markov, resident Planeswalker of Innistrad. Her traditional abilities of shielding the player and humans from harm with Hexproof lends well to her Selesnyan colors and could be a powerful card inhuman tribal decks, much like her other incarnations.

Her propensity to help others in her plane could lead to an interest in extending her protection to the entire multiverse. She could be another powerful ally to the Gatewatch in their efforts to protect the Multiverse should she become a planeswalker. Narratively, she is a strong choice with good abilities that go well with her colors. Lastly, having never had an angel Planeswalker previously, Sigarda would be an interesting figure to explore as she traverses the planes, many of which revere angels as saviors.

5Tomik: Gifted Law Mage And Husband To Ral Zarek

Tomik is a law and security mage from the Orzhov guild in Ravnica. Currently, Tomik is the acting Orzhov guildmaster and husband of Ral Zarek, the planeswalking guildmaster of the Izzet guild. Being a master of the law of Ravnica, Tomik is a master manipulator of the political landscape of Ravnica and holds immense power as a result.

What makes Tomik most appealing as a Planeswalker is his potential abilities. While only one card of Tomik is available, the idea of a mono white law mage that shuts down methods of play is intriguing. Previously, Dovin Baan did similar actions, but with his death, there is a void for a good control Planeswalker. If done well, a Tomik Planeswalker could impose new rules with emblems or alter the game with a controlling passive that would be an immense boon for fans of control. Additionally, as the husband of Ral Zarek, it could narratively open him up for new stories in Multiverse. This could even lead to a Jeskai combination card, similar to how Rowan and Will Kenrith had a combined card in Eldraine, which would be unique.

4Krenko: Goblin Mob Boss With A Heart

Krenko is a guildless goblin from the plane of Ravnica. Having no allegiance to the guilds, he is free to make his own fortune and, atypical of most goblins, wants to provide for his fellow goblins through the jobs he takes. Narratively, he could be interesting, offering another loose cannon in the Multiverse in a similar vein to Tybalt, but with a care towards the often mistreated goblins that permeate the planes.

His abilities often center around summoning goblins, which could lend well to a token-based Planeswalker card. Given the amount of goblins present in the multiverse, he could have some good tribal support even in Standard. Additionally, as a mono Red Planeswalker, his presence could shift away from the current crutch of usingChandra as the Red Planeswalkerevery single time.

3Squee: Once Immortal, Now Seeking New Meaning

Another goblin and mono-Red choice, Squee is an interesting character in Magic. Once just a normal goblin chef on the Weatherlight, Squee was taken by the Phyrexians and experimented on until he became immortal. After being Compleated and killed again in Dominaria United, Squee was once again brought back by an enigmatic presence known as Salvation, only this time as a mortal goblin. With this last lease on life, Squee chose to lead the goblins of Dominaria against the Phyrexian invaders.

Narratively, Squee has a long history with both the Phyrexians and the resistance against them. Squee as a Planeswalker could lean further into this either as a potent adversary to Phyrexia or as a goblin in search of the friends he lost. Additionally, given his current mortal form, it could offer a way for him to find a new purpose with his last life before it is taken away for good, making for some interesting and soulful drama in the story. Gameplay-wise, Planeswalker Squee could offer some interesting staying power that reflects his previous immortality, making him a good staying presence in Red decks which often do not have many such options.

2Nashi: Son Of Tamiyo With Great Narrative Potential

Nashi is the adopted son of Tamiyo, who raised the young nezumi (ratfolk) from infancy after Tezzeret killed his family. While initially a background character in the story of Kaladesh, where he met Ajani, Nashi eventually got his own exceptionally powerful card in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.

Making Nashi a Planeswalker would be an interesting change of pace from other Planeswalker cards. He’s young, offering a new viewpoint different from the mostly adult Planeswalker cast. He would be mono Black, which could use more non-evil characters. It would also be a nice change from the largely human cast of Planeswalkers that the game is known for, especially with many of thenon-human Planeswalkers being Compleated. Additionally, his personal ties with multiple Planeswalkers set him up to have big narrative potential, even more so than many of the current Planeswalker cast.

Magic: The Gathering art of Squee The Immortal

Functionally, Magic could lean into his ability to cast spells for life, his stealing ability, or his narrative interest in drones to make a sort of aggressive Black artifact creature Planeswalker. Either way, this nezumi has a lot of potential for the game that could only be expanded upon as a Planeswalker.

1Jhoira: The Ageless Planar Sailor Could Rise Again

Jhoira is the immortal former first captain of the planar-sailing skyshipWeatherlightand a major player in Magic’s first war against Phyrexia. As a former sailor of the planes of Magic’s Multiverse, she is intimately aware of their overall workings and would be well suited to taking that role on again as a Planeswalker. Her past with Teferi and Karn could lead her to take an active interest in their storylines, such as their own fights against Phyrexia and their work in the Gatewatch.

The only issue is that Jhoira would step on the domain of Saheeli, an Izzet Planeswalker with a similar artifact theme. However, tweaks could be done to accent Saheeli’s more aggressive side and build upon Jhoira’s card advantage and no-cost-casting mechanics to make them more differentiated. Regardless, Jhoira is one of those characters that have been around in Magic for so long that she deserves a bigger narrative opportunity. Making her a Planeswalker could help her accomplish that.
