Night In The Woodsis the turbulent story of college dropout, Mae Borowski, as she returns to her hometown of Possum Springs. With her friends moving on to lives and careers of their own, the choices you make will shape her journey, allowing her to rediscover her place in a town that has stood still yet somehow left her behind.

When youfinish your first playthrough, mystery still hangs in the air. The open ending is both hopeful and uncertain, so here are some questions we still have after that final band practice.

8Does Mae Get Her Bombshell?

If you follow Bea’s storyline and choose to hang out with her more,Mae runs into a cute girlat a college party during the duo’s fourth hangout. She is mysterious, cryptic, and a little bit weird – which turns out to be exactly Mae’s type. She rushes out to catch up with Bea, who leaves in a huff after Mae puts her foot in her mouth yet again and messes up Bea’s own search for romance.

Bea and Mae reconcile their differences, but not before Mae expresses her desire to come back to another college party soon, so she can finally get her bombshell’s phone number. The ex-besties are solid friends by the end of the game, so we can only hope that Mae eventually got the girl after one last hectic night out.

7Did Gregg And Angus Leave Possum Springs?

If you follow Gregg’s storyline and choose to hang out with him over Bea, you discover that Angus and Gregg had been making plans to actually leave the town for greener pastures. Gregg is Mae’s chaotic-good best friend, with boundless energy and a taste for what he and Mae fondly call “crimes.” Hanging out with Gregg incurs more minigames and shenanigans than Bea’s more emotionally-tinged pathway, but it isn’t all knives and roses.

His boyfriend Angus expresses concern over Gregg’s behaviour now that Mae has returned to town, noticing his self-destructive tendencies reemerging. He feels that this pattern could jeopardise the couple’s plans to leave Possum Springs to start a life of their own, something that is not wrapped up or finalised at the end of the game. This would leave Bea and Mae as the last friends left in town, so I hope you gave her the time of day at least once amidst your crimes with Gregg.

6Did The Cult Survive?

The dramatic conclusion of the game’s main subplot sees the gang coming face to face with a murderous cult that has been operating in secret for years. They learn that the cult is behind numerous disappearances, including that of Mae’sfriend Casey Hartley, who was sacrificed to an eldritch entity known as the Black Goat.

The cult explains that the murders were just crimes, given their belief that the entity has been helping the townsfolk regain a semblance of normalcy in the once-industrious Possum Springs. You don’t find out what happens to them, since the friends leave the cultists in a caved-in mining tunnel after narrowly escaping it themselves. Did they find a way out, or did the cult’s secrets die down there too?

5Who Were The Cult Members?

When the game ends, you don’t find out who the cult members actually were. You hear some names being thrown about during the confrontation in the abandoned mine, but these might have just been codenames. Aftera second playthrough, you’ll notice that groups of townsfolk gather on the streets to discuss or argue over the use of the town’s budget, showing that there has always been a level of concern amidst the townspeople over the direction of Possum Springs' future. Could these disgruntled groups, with their strong opinions and heavy emotional investment, make up the ranks of the cult? You don’t get enough time at the end of the game to explore the town and pick out absent characters, but this eerie “whodunnit” aspect definitely lingers as an unanswered question.

4Was Mae’s Grandfather In The Cult?

Remember that tooth Mae finds in the crawlspace at home? If you ask her dad to move the boxes, Mae discovers a creepy tooth hidden in a safe at the back of the crawlspace, something that becomes important when you research ghosts in the library with Bea. Don’t discard the non-paranormal news clippings – you’ll come across an article detailing a secret society of workers that rose up against their harsh employers. It says that members of the group used teeth as a symbol of their union, hiding them in their own homes. If Mae’s grandpa hid the tooth there, this is highly indicative of him being a member of the secret society himself. What if the secret society is actually the cult? What if this is why Mae kept having nightmares, explaining her connection to the Black Goat?

3Does Casey Get Justice?

When the game wraps up and the team now know what happened to Casey, you don’t see them going to the police. It seems business as usual, with the band getting together for practice just like any other evening.

But with Mae’s aunt being a police officer herself, does she ever tell her what happened to Casey? You can see “missing” posters sitting outside the police station, and Mae seems heartbroken that the Hartleys still have hope that their son will return. It’s a heavy burden for anyone to carry, let alone a group of misfit 20-somethings who have just discovered a grisly side to their seemingly humdrum town. Is this a secret the team plans to keep, or will they find a way to bring their brutally murdered friend some justice?

2Did Aunt Molly Know More Than She Let On?

Mae’s Aunt Molly, or Aunt Mall Cop as she not-so-fondly calls her, drops many a cryptic hint throughout the game that something bad is happening in town. She warns Mae that it’s not safe for her to keep poking at the mysteries she uncovers, which could just be cop-speak for “keep your nose clean, kid.” However, it could also suggest that molly knows more than she lets on. Could the police be in-the-know about the murderous cult operating down in the mines? And if not, why does Molly have such a bad feeling about this relatively sleepy town?

1What Happened To Bruce?

If you explore the woods behind the church, you’ll meet not only the Pastor but a man named Bruce. Bruce’s story is a tragic one, and he uncovers it bit by bit as you return to talk to him each day. He has no family left in Possum Springs and has been living on the streets ever since he lost his job, deciding eventually that he will leave the city on the next train and start life anew elsewhere. Bruce vanishes one day, never to be seen again - but did he actually leave town, or did something bad happen to him? You know the cult kidnaps and sacrifices those they feel would not be missed, so Bruce might have made an ideal victim.
