Many video game characters are cops, soldiers, or Government agents. Yet, not everyone can work within the law to achieve their goals. Naturally, most of those people are villains. But some law-breaking individuals fight for good. These people don’t care too much for rules or official procedures, but they still want justice. So, they become vigilantes who work outside the law to do good.

The comic-book world has an abundance of these folks, and some have made it into gaming. Yet, the industry doesn’t need to rely on adaptations for compelling vigilantes. Game developers can create their own, which is the case for the following individuals.

8Corvo Attano - Dishonored

At the beginning of the firstDishonoredgame, Corvo serves as the royal protector of the empress. However, things quickly go wrong when she’s killed, her daughter Emily is kidnapped, and Corvo is framed for the whole thing.

Naturally, he’s immediately imprisoned, but he quickly breaks free and sets out on a mission to save Emily and clear his name. Since everyone believes he’s guilty, he can’t go to the authorities to help. So, he turns into a vigilante who hunts down all the people responsible in an effort to find the young girl.

John Marston covering with gun in Red Dead Redemption

A man working for Government agents sounds like the antithesis of a vigilante. However, in the original Red Dead Redemption, John Marston’s work with the Government isn’t exactly above board. For one, they kidnap his family to force him to do their bidding, which probably isn’t standard Government procedure even in the Wild West. So, it’s fair to assume that they’re working outside the law.

It’s certainly vigilante work, as Marston rides around America, apprehending his former friends who happen to be violent criminals. While he’s reluctant to do the job, he’s certainly good at it since he’s one ofthe greatest gunslingers in gaming history.

He’s not the type of vigilante to go around stopping crime and beating up criminals. Instead, he’s desperately trying to find out what happened to his daughter. Along the way, he takes out several corrupt people, typically in a ruthless fashion. After all, the lack of a boss allows him to be more brutal than he is in the previous games.

5Takayuki Yagami - Judgment Series

In the Judgment games, Yagami is a former lawyer and current private investigator. As he’s a detective, you may expect him to follow the proper procedure at all times and work within the law.

That doesn’t really happen, though. Yagami doesn’t allow such frivolous things to get in the way of justice. He’s not afraid of infiltrating restricted areas or beating the hell out of people who deserve it. His way of doing things does sometimes get him in trouble with authorities. But he also regularly gets results and stops evil people.

4Garrus Vakarian - Mass Effect 2

Everybody’s favorite Mass Effect companion, Garrus, has a few different roles throughout the series, from C-Sec officer to Military consultant. For a short time in Mass Effect 2, though, he serves as a vigilante on a space station called Omega.

This place is filled with all sorts of morally questionable people and gangs who are involved in plenty of criminal activity. Garrus, going by the name Archangel, puts together a team to fight back against all the rogues. And thanks to his exceptional combat skills and ability to strategize, Garrus creates many problems for the various groups.

3Max Payne - Max Payne 3

Throughout the Max Payne series, the titular character has an up-and-down law enforcement career. By Max Payne 3, he’s very much not a cop anymore. He’s not completely out of work, though, as he gets a job as a personal bodyguard in Brazil.

Without going too deep into spoilers, things go downhill rather quickly. So, Max ends up going on a bit of a rampage, taking out many rogues in the process. He’s not in the best frame of mind during the escapade, but he remains committed to bringing down the evil people.

2Ezio Auditore - Assassin’s Creed Series

Some of the best vigilantes from video games feature in theAssassin’s Creedseries. This is because almost every Assassin in the series is a vigilante. The greatest of them all is Ezio Auditore. He serves as the main protagonist in Assassin’s Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations.

During all those games, his goal is to stop tyranny wherever he finds it in the hope of reserving people’s freedom. His way of doing this is by systematically killing all the influential individuals who are making people’s lives miserable. Not all the authorities appreciate this form of justice.

1Solid Snake - Metal Gear Solid Series

At the start of the Metal Gear series, Solid Snake works for several official Government and military organizations. Yet, he and his best buddy, Otacon, eventually transform into vigilantes.

Initially, their main goal is to halt the creation ofdangerous machines known as Metal Gears, typically by destroying them. These activities cause some controversy, and they get referred to as terrorists, mainly by the people building Metal Gears. Later the duo turns their attention to the old enemy Liquid Ocelot, who is on his way to world domination. So, an elderly Snake goes on one last crusade to stop him.
