Updated on June 12, 2025 by Gabrielle Castania:Now that One Piece Odyssey has launched for the Nintendo Switch, we’re back to update some of our guides for the game. If you’re looking for some help with One Piece Odyssey’s combat system, look no further!

Speed Things Up Once You’ve Seen It All

When you first begin playing One Piece Odyssey, the animations for your teammates' menu of attacks are pretty entertaining, watching them find all sorts of cool ways to kick some ass (especially in costume). However, with each attack coming with a visual, and there only being so many attacks in the game and the game beingbetween 30 and 60 hours longdepending on your playstyle, you may want to hasten things sooner than later.

The attacks you deal out are swift, however, the abilities you’ll want to usealways come with an animation of varying length. There are so many battles to fight through that eventually watching all of those cool buttime-consuming animations will drag. If you want to get in and out of the fights quickly, keep the battle speed-up option selectedto keep the team auto-battling.

Thankfully this is just a quick button tap, so you’re able to enjoy any newly unlocked abilities in all their glory or really soak up the dramatic story moments, before switching back to the faster option.

Exploit The Power Triangle

Alwayspay attention to the power trianglewhen consideringwhich teammates to useand when. This is a kind of Rock, Paper, Scissors mechanic, but for One Piece Odyssey, it’s calledPower, Technique, andSpeedinstead.

Thankfully, you don’t have to memorize what kind of attacks your teammates or enemies use - you’ll see one of the attack type’s options beside your characters' names, as well as on the health bars showing how much HP your enemies still have.Exploit weaknesses in the triangle whenever possibleto save on your attack power.

Positioning And Zoning Are Critical

You’ll notice right away that thefights in One Piece Odyssey take place over a few close areas, which the game refers to aszones. The first time you see this is early on in the game, whenUsopp gets paralyzedand the remaining teammates need to advance through to a new zone to save him before he’s knocked out.

Teammates spawn in set zones when the fight begins, but you canchange zonesin a number of ways. You can:

You’ll usually need to clear a zone entirely to advance, so keep these movement options in mind.

To Use Long Range Attacks Or Close?

One of the coolest parts of combat in One Piece Odyssey is using yourteammates' unique abilitiesfrom the menu of availableskillsduring fights. In addition to being mindful of the number of targets you’ll hit with that move, you’ll also need to pay attention to whether these attacks arelong-range or close-rangein nature.

Enemies in your zone are damaged more immediately by close-range attacks, while enemies in other zones take more damage from ranged attacks. Be mindful of which kind of attack you’re choosing to deal the most damage.Choosing a close-range ability on a distanced enemy moves your character to that zone, so be careful if you’re not trying to move!

Weaknesses And Resistances

Throughout the game, you’ll encounter a wide variety of enemies with a ton of affinities, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for anyattack to which an enemy isweak, indicated by the word“weak” in pink textduring your action decision.

If an enemy is weak to the attack, they’ll take extra damage from moves like this – which you’ll find, for example, withRobin’s Dos Fleurs attackthat only works on male opponents.

The Straw Hat Pirates about to enter a battle.

On the contrary, enemies might also bestrong against your moves, too, which is noted byblue textfor the word“strong”on the screen. Exactly opposite of the weaknesses, you may find yourself in trouble if you use too many moves that don’t do enough damage.

Switch Out Teammates When Necessary

One of the best features of One Piece Odyssey’s combat is the ability to freelymove your characters in and out of your team during a fight. Simply open the battle menu and select’Switch Battle Crew'. From here, select the member you want to switch out, then the member you want to switch into the battle. Finally, confirm the selection, and watch the characters swap places.

This is one of the ways it pays topay attention to the power triangle, since you’re able swap in teammates that can do better damage to enemies in their zone. you may do this with inactive teammates, so pop in whoever, whenever!

Switching teammates does not consume that teammate’s action, so make liberal use of this tactic to quickly swap to someone more effective!

Keep An Eye On Your TP

In order to perform your cool special abilities for each character, they’ll need tosave up some TP, the resource needed to execute their most powerful moves - exponentially more impactful than your standard physical attacks! However, special skill attacks use TP, and if you don’t have enough, you simply can’t use that attack just yet. Nothing worse than having that happen just before the end of a fight!

You can replenish your TP in a few ways, like:

We’ve found that standard attacks are our best bet for boosting out TP - you’re still damaging the opponent, andyou’re boosting your TP.

Use Item Buffs

Where all thoseitems and mealsin your inventory really come in handy are thebuffsearned for consuming themin battle! Themeals that Sanji can preparearegreat for managing many options at once. For example, the ‘Bronze Bat Soup’ heals all allies by 1000HP in and out of battle. However, if you use it during a fight, it will alsoincrease all allies' DEF and GUTS stats by 10% for 3 turns.

As you play you’ll unlock more recipes with powerful buffs like health regeneration and protection against certain elements.

It’s not just food that can aid youduring fights.Usopp can craft ammo ballsto be thrown at enemies, hitting them with a debuffwhen used in battle. These are crafted in campsites and can have an impact on the enemy’s DEF, send them to sleep or even paralyze them.

Monitor Your Accessories

Make sure youcheck your accessories often, as you’ll find a lot of new, even more powerful ones in crates or as rewards throughout the game. Equipment comes with avariety of buffsto your stats when equipped onto a teammate! Some might apply a burn or freezing effect to the enemy during battle, while others will increase your base HP stat or your attack power.

Each character can equip several pieces of equipment, as long as they have space to equip them. Cycling through these can be of great benefit to weaker characters or those with low HP stats. Later in the game, Robin is able to combine accessories to make them even more powerful, too, so be prepared to rearrange!

Chase The XP

Another great feature of the battles israndom challengesthat ask you tomeet a requirement for a bumper crop of XPor a batch of cooking and crafting ingredients. Some of these tasks can be simple - beat this enemy within one turn, or kill this enemy with a specific character. Others scale up the danger by bestowing huge buffs to the enemy, and you need to beat them before they knock you out.

Achieving these requests can really help with leveling up your crew, especially later in the gamewhen level requirements are much higher. It seems the XP bonus amount is random, but it nearly always gives tens of thousands of XP points. This can see your battlerewards go from 6,000XP to over 30,000XP, which pushes your crew through the levels swiftly.
