There are some dungeons inValkyrie Profile: Lenneththat feel short, sweet, and not very challenging. Black Dream Tower is not one of those dungeons. Black Dream Tower is a difficult marathon of very similar-looking rooms, annoying enemies with powerful attacks, and a brutal puzzle boss fight at the end.

It’s lucky, then, that the dungeon is also quite fun to traverse, once you’ve resigned yourself to lots of aimless wandering, tons of enemies to trounce, and quite a lot of decent treasure to pick up. It’s worth taking on, that’s for sure - if only to get an in-game justification forwhyDragon-Tooth Warriors are so tough.
Black Dream Tower Overview
Black Dream Tower has a very convoluted map with lots of entrances and exits to navigate. This is one of the dungeons in the game that rewards the use of anEye of Heavenand liberal use of the map - even with explicit directions, things can get very confusing.

Can cast Frigid Damsel to deal lots of damage and a possible freeze, so take them out quickly.

Will use Reflect Sorcery and then barrage you with high-damage lightning attacks. Try to take it out with spells before this happens. Wait Reaction attacks can be used to start combos, otherwise.

Explodes when it gets low on health, so ensure you only take it down below half health when you’re sure you can finish it off. Shadow Servant will help a lot.
Regardless of which difficult mode you’re on, you should have anEther Scepterby now - either from theGorhia Cult HQfrom the previous chapter or theTower of Lezard Valethon this chapter.A sorcerer, equipped with the Ether Scepter, will be able to instantly kill or severely damage any monster in this dungeon with Lightning Bolt of Icicle Edge.Bring two sorcerers and each battle can be over in the first round.
Navigating Black Dream Tower
From the entrance, head all the way to the right until you reach some stairs to the rear- climb them.Walk to the leftuntil you can take arear exit- take it, and then headall the way to the leftto get theAuto Itemskill book from a chest. On this same screen, headall the way to the rightto pick up theVainslayersword, which is a very nice weapon only hampered by a small chance to break each round.
There arethree exits to the rearon this screen -take the one on the far left, and thenfollow this pathuntil you reach a screen with a chest containing aWarhammer- be careful of the explosion trap. On this screen, there aretwo exits to the front,take the one on the right. There are two chests on this screen, and they are trapped with large explosions. They contain anElement Scepterand theNoise Arrowskill book.
Backtrack to the screen with two toothy platformson the right and jump up them. Thescaly blanket-looking thingscan be used asladdersto climb up to the top of the screen.
Use therope to climb across the gap, and then take theexit to the rearat the very top of the screen.
On this next screen, take thefrontal exit on your left, thenkeep taking frontal exitsuntil you run out of them. You’ll be at thefront of the dungeon- another screen withmultiple rear exits.Take the first one to your rightand you’ll end up in a tall room, falling.
After hitting the bottom in this room, start making your way back up to the top, opening the chests on the way to get theHitskill book, aQuartz Gem, and theSplashskill book. Take thefrontal exit at the top of this roomand thenfollow this path back to the front of the dungeon.
Take therighthand exitto the rearto find aDancing Swordchest trapped with an explosion, andthen take the lefthand exit to the rearto reach a screen withtwo exits to the rear.
Take the lefthand exit to the rearin this room and headfurther to the rearto reach the back of the dungeon. Here, open the chest on the left to get aLightning Boltspell book and the one on the right for anEye of Heaven. They are both trapped with explosions.
Head back to the frontandtake the frontal exit that you’ll find far on the right. You’ll find a save point here. Save your game and stock up on whatever you might need. Thepath to the leftwill pit you against the boss.

The gimmick with this battle is thatwhen a Dragon-Tooth Warrior dies, the soul inside it will usePossess, healing andstrengthening one of the enemies left behind, boosting its damageandits maximum health. This is true of every Dragon-Tooth Warrior in the game. This makes defeating the Dragon-Tooth Warrior before the Wise Sorcerer a dangerous idea, so you shouldtry your best to deal with the Sorcerer first.
The Dragon-Tooth Warrior has mean attacks and is weak to an element you likely don’t have access to just yet. Its attacks will reliably inflictfaint, but you’ll find that many of them are easily guarded against - sobe on the lookout for counterattack opportunities.
As with all other Wise Sorcerers in the game, you’ll need tobe wary of this boss. He has two spells,Dark Savior and Fiendish Shape, the latter of which is unblockable. A good strategy is to keepReflect Sorceryup at all times, which will heavily neutralize the Wise Sorcerer’s damage output. Not only will this protect you, but the reflected spells will
Our advice is tobring two (or three) sorcerers to the fight. If you have twoEther Sceptersat this point, that’s fantastic - equip them both with these incredible weapons and let them go to town on the Wise Sorcerer from afar while your melee attackers whittle the Dragon-Tooth Warrior’s health down.
If you don’t have two Ether Scepters, you can useDragonbane, the Katana/Staff acquired byheading to Hai Lan and talking to Minayo at Nanami’s family’s shrine after recruiting Nanami.
If you find yourself struggling a lot to cope with the Wise Sorcerer’sFiendish Shapeattack before you can burst him down, it might be worthequipping Valkyrie with your best bowso that she can contribute to the back row damage effort.
The Dragon-Tooth Warrior has very high RDM, so you might want to useSap Guardon it if you have it. Magic is the best way to defeat it, though, so keep your sorcerers healthy.
Alternatively, you can use a Dragon Slayer to instantly destroy the Dragon-Tooth Warrior. You can get this weapon either fromArngrim’s house in Artoliaor theOddrock Caves(if you’re on Normal mode). Again, though,we recommend only using this if you’ve already killed the Wise Sorcerer, equipping the sword mid-battle.
Black Dream Tower Artifacts
There are two artifacts to collect after the nightmare that is that boss fight.
Bewitching Statue
Can be transmutated into a Gem of Activity, the False Arrow skill book, or a Unicorn Horn.We recommend turning it into the Gem of Activity, which increases the number of magic gems that pop out of enemies to recover your CT gauges.
Fairy Bottle
Can be transmutated into the Gem of Creation, Orihalcon, or Gem of Illusion. If you’re on Easy mode, you can only turn it into the Gem of Creation.If you’re on Normal mode, wait until you have the Gem of Creation from the Tower of Lezard Valeth, and turn this into the Orihalcon, which you should then turn into the Creation Jewel.
