That’s not all! The boss of this fearsome locale is the Kraken, a beast of myth and legend. Getting to this scaly fright will require a bit of platforming and talking to the undead - let us guide you through.

Cave Of Thackus Overview

The Cave of Thackus is available in Chapter 4 if you’re playing on Normal or Hard mode. It’s a pretty short dungeon that teaches you quickly about RDM and has some interesting foes to fight.

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth - Cave of Thackus Entrance

Fire

420

Very low health, but incredibly defensive. You basically need a spellcaster with a fire spell to beat these in good time. Otherwise, not a threat. Cast Fire Storm from the menu to target all enemies at once.

Dragon Zombie

As always with Dragon Zombies, use the Dragon Slayer sword (from Arngrim’s house in Artolia) or a Holy Crystal to win. Alternatively, a mage with Mystic Cross (such as Lorenta) can defeat it in two casts.

Harpies like to cast Reflect Sorcery on themselves, so beware of that. They’re no too tough to beat, as long as you can knock them out of the air - consider equipping Valkyrie with a bow for this dungeon.

Not very strong, though they can be annoyingly defensive at times. Use magic or the Splash skill.

Dark

Very nasty enemies with hard-hitting spells, an explosive suicide attack that deals a tremendous amount of damage, and can Faint your party members. Use dark spells or avoid them altogether.

By this point, you may have acquired an Ether Scepter - there’s one in the Tower of Lezard Valeth. A sorcerer with a maxed-out Magic Pow skill, an Ether Scepter, and the Fire Storm spell can make short work of pretty much every encounter in this dungeon by casting the spell from the menu to hit every enemy at once.

Exploring The Cave Of Thackus

This dungeon starts out pretty straightforward, simplystart moving to the left, fighting or avoiding the enemies as you go.

Note thatyou cannot freeze enemies while stuck underwater.

Be wary of theDragon Zombiewaiting to attack anyone who falls during the platforming segment. You cannot get the jump on it with a sword slash, so it’s more dangerous than other Dragon Zombies.

When you reach the third screen, you’ll have a choice between heading up or down.Head upto find a Crab Giant and an explosive chest containing anEye of Heaven. Once you’ve grabbed that, head back down the chasm and take the left exit.

On this screen, there’s asmall gap on the left. Crouch and hit the Circle button to slide through the gap - you’ll have to fight the crab there, but it’s worth it to get theStrike Edgeskill book from the chest it guards. The chest has a small explosion trap.Slide back under the wall, and then take the exit to the front.

Enter the pool of water here andslice the plant there. The flower will float, providing a platform that you can use to jump across. You might have tomake a large crystal on the edge of the waterand use it to get a bit more height for the jump.Continue on to the right.

Save your game andinteract with the ghostly figurehere. He will instruct you to reseal the Sluice Gate.Make sure you also interact with the body- Valkyrie will crouch and examine him.

Resealing The Sluice Gate

Press on to the right until you reach a room with a very large lake in it. Head underwater andslice all five plantsthere to create platforms to jump across.

The platforming can be very finicky, so we recommend using theRewind functionof the remaster to cut down on frustrations.

Keep heading left and you’ll come to a room with adeep pool of water.Drop down, and then take the exit to the front. Make your way to theleftin this underwater cavern, beating the enemies as you go, and you’ll eventually come to a small room with one of the floating plants.Get on top of the plant, crouch, and then swing your sword- you’ll cut the stem while on top of the plant, and float up with it. Open the chest to get aFlare Baselard- beware of the explosion trap.

If you ever mess up with these plants, you can justleave a screen and return. The flower will be reattached to the stem.

Return to the tall room with the deep pool, anduse the flower to float back up to dry land. Head up now, vertically.Jump up to the leftand continue on until you reach a split in the path.

Take the lower path first, until you reach a waterfall and a floating ball. You cannot walk through the waterfall - it’ll damage you if you try. Instead, shoot a crystal at the ballthroughthe waterfall. You’ll get Event EXP when you manage to hit it.

Head back to the split andtake the upper path this time. Interact with theconsolehere and view the cutscene that plays - the water will drain.Drop through the holein the ground and press on to the left. Save your game at the Memory Stone, and prepare for the boss.

How To Beat The Kraken

The Kraken isbacked up by three Crab Giants, and you’ll be treated to a short tutorial on weapon qualities when the fight starts.

Both the Kraken and the trio of Crab Giants are deathlyweak to Fire, so it’s a pretty good tactic tobring multiple sorcerers into the battlewith Fire Storm. If youcast the spell from the menuinstead of as a regular attack, it’ll target the entire enemy party at once - one cast should be enough to get rid of the crabs, and a second should put a big dent in the Kraken.

Once you’ve dealt with the crabs, you still have a very bulky enemy to deal with. The Kraken can deal a ton of damage withLightning Bolt and a unique tentacle attackthat hits for a ton of damage, most likely knocking out all but the bulkiest of characters. Be ready withUnion Plumesor theInvoke Featherspell.

As the tutorial hinted at, you should favor veryhigh-damage, low hit count weaponshere to try and pierce the Kraken’s huge RDM, though, withfire spells, victory is almost guaranteed.

There aretwo very nice artifactsin this dungeon.

Bracelet of Zoe

A fantastic decoration that increases the amount of DME a character gains upon level-up by 300. Brilliant.

Coin of Fortune

Grants whoever equips it more experience.

There is no convenient shortcut to exit this dungeon.Talk to the ghostly figure on the way outto put him to rest - you get a tiny bit of Event EXP for it, so you might as well!
