You’ll unlock this dungeon in Chapter 6, and you’ll want to be adequately prepared before heading in - it really is a doozy.
Sunken Shrine Overview
Sunken Shrine is a dungeon that has enemies that are just as tough as the puzzles it forces you to solve - it’s a true test of your skills with the game.
18,400
Poison, Holy
840
Can inflict darkness with its attacks. Will drop Mystic Cross spell books sometimes, which is good for this dungeon.
42,600
5,600
These monsters have ton of health, but you should have some great weapons and accessories now. Take advantage of its weaknesses to cut the fight down considerably. Venom Ink can inflict a multitude of status ailments, including stone.
15,300
980
With low health and non-threatening attacks, these are fodder enemies.
40,000
None
16,800
As the only enemy in this dungeon without a weakness, you’ll have to fight it normally. Its attacks deal a ton of damage but have lots of hits, so high RDM will be helpful here. You’ll have enough tools to deal with it. Can also use Poison Blow, which will easily deal over 12,000 damage, and will bring fallen allies back to life with Restore.
20,000
2,100
As with the crabs of the Cave of Thackus, these enemies have tons of RDM, so your attacks will do very little damage. They don’t do much damage, but the long fights will wear you down - use Poison Blow and hope for the poison proc.
17,200
1,120
Can paralyze, but is pretty frail and easy to kill.
Thanks to the abundance ofpoison-weak enemies, a great mage withPoison Blowis a boon in this dungeon.
There are multiple encounters with either multipleInferior Eyes or Inferior Eyes backed up by other monsterswho protect it by means of being in the front row. Thanks to their Restore ability, you’ll want to verify you’re finishing off the Inferior Eye first, and when there are multiples, killing them at the same time -just like the bosses in the Dark Tower of Xervah.
How To Use The Door Lock Contraption
Head to the right. As you’d expect from the name of the dungeon, much of it is underwater. Defeat the Giant Squid and emerge on dry land further to the right.
When in rooms completely submerged in water, you canmash the jump button to make Valkyrie gain as much height as you need- she can reach the very top of the water, or the ceiling!
In this room, you’re introduced to gargoyle heads that shootfreezing beams(similar to those fromOddrock Caves). Avoid these beams and jump into the pool to find some pedestals. Jump on them to make the gargoyle heads move down momentarily -use the pedestal on the rightand jump on the gargoyle’s head when it’s at the bottom and use it to lift yourself up out of the water.
On the next screen to the right, open the chest to obtain anEye of Heaven, but beware the confusion gas. Remain crouched to avoid it.
Now,head to the front. Press onto the right, but ignore the clockwork contraption at the rear and the machine in the small room, insteadcontinuing on to the long room on the right. Inside, you’ll find two Red Lobster fights and a largestone slabat the far end. You candrag this slab- take it as far left as it’ll go.
Once you’ve done this, return to the very large clockwork machine(past the small room with the smaller machine). You’ll spot a handle on each side of the machine -jump up to the one on the leftand it’ll drop one segment and you’ll get some Event EXP. Don’t let go yet -wait until the handle falls two more segmentsto the bottom.
Now, head to the small machine andinteract with both handles, pulling them away from the center. Once both are out, you’ll witness a cutscene.
How To Solve The Water Levels Puzzle
After the short cutscene, you’ll beunderwater. You’ll notice that you cannot move to the left anymore, but you canmove to the right- this is because you brought the handle down to the bottom on the previous screen. Move to the right and you’ll be able towalk right underneath the slabyou dragged earlier - turns out gigantic stone slabs are buoyant.
On the next room, you’ll notice a glowing orb on the right.Hit the orbonce with your sword to bring a large platform down to the level just above you, and thenhit it once moreto move it up one level. You can mash the jump button to float up to see where the platform is.
Movetwo screens to the leftand you’ll be in a tall room - now that it’s submerged, you can mash the jump button to head up and seetwo exits on the right. Take themiddle exitto find a chest containing confusion gas and aSacred Javelinspell book, and thentake the top exitfor aDarkskill book protected by an explosion trap.
In thenext room from the Dark skill book, you’ll find anothermachine with two handles. Push them in todrain the water, and then move on to the right. Thanks to the orb below you in this room, you have a platform to stand on.Take the rear exiton the right to find a confusion gas trapped chest containing anAngel Curio.
Bring the water backby pulling the handles out of the machine, and thenhead back to the orbat the bottom of the right-hand shaft.Hit the orb twiceso that the big metal platform is just above you, and thengo back to the small machine and drain the wateragain by pushing the handles in.Head to the right and fall down, then take the rear exit to progress.
Opening The Way Forward With Crystals
On the next screen with water, leap over the gapand open the chest for aLapis Lazuli, and do the same on the left side of the screen to get aPrismatic Missilespell book. In the middle of the water, you’ll spotsomething in an indent above you- it’s a switch that you must activate by making something float up into it.
On dry land, create a crystal, and then smash it with your sword- you might have noticed by now that smashed crystals leave behindfragments. Pick one of these up, and then walk into the water -release the crystal underneath the indentin the ceiling by hitting the jump button. You should hear amechanical noise- you may nowtake the exit on the leftof this room.
In the next room, use a crystal to reflect the gargoyle head’s freezing laserinto the orb near the door. When it hits, you’ll unlock the way to the rear.
Press on until you reach another room with a very large pool.Head to the left, defeating the monsters on the way, and open the chests to get aRuin’s Fatesword and aFootman’s Axespear.
The solution to this room is tosmash a crystal on dry landandbring the larger piece all the way to the left underwater. Release it here and quickly mash the jump button toget on top of the floating shardbefore it reaches the top, where you wouldn’t be able to use it as a platform. Carry on to the left.
This is another room withswitches that you must activate with floating crystals- once you open the door to the rear that you’ll find to the left and on the ground, enter it andimmediately start mashing the jump button as quickly as you can- you have enough time toreach the gapat the very top. Keep hitting the jump button and you’ll eventually be pushed up to the top as the walls close, letting you grab theChargeskill book inside the chest andpress on to the right.
Grab the chest containing theFlame Jewelhere, and then take the exit to the rear.Climb the stairs, and then head to the final puzzle. This one is tricky - first, bounce the gargoyle head’s freezing rayas per usual, getting it to activate the topmost floating orb.
Once you have a crystal set up that targets the topmost orb, make the crystal on the ceiling a larger crystalby hitting it with another crystal, and then,at the beginning of a laser cycle, burst the crystal with a third shot. The floating crystal remnant will carry on the laser beam as it falls, activating the middle and bottom orbs, and opening the door to the right.
Press on, defeating the monsters andsaving the game. The next room contains the boss.
How To Beat The Wraith
This might very well be the first time you face a boss with an HP pool in the six-digit realm! It might also be the first boss you face that you can annihilate in one hit!
100,000
70,000
This battle can be incredibly difficult if you aren’t prepared. The Wraith’s biggest trick is that it usesGravity Blessingevery other turn, and this will deal anincredible amount of lightning damage- probably one-shotting your entire team. To counter this, you’ll needequipment that protects against lightning damage:
Stun Checksare cheap and can be equipped by everyone, so get a few of them set up. In addition to this,Gutswill help out a lot, as willAuto Itemwhenset up with Elixirs and Prime Elixirsat high priority. As long as you can reliablysurvive a Gravity Blessing, the rest of the fight shouldn’t go too badly - the Wraith isn’t too defensive.
Alternatively, if you have theHoly Water of Mithra, you can use it todeal 100,000 damage, instantly ending the fight. You get the Holy Water of Mithra from theCitadel of Flame.
Great heavy armor that protects against holy damage.
Slashing Sword “Farewell”
A very nice sword with a three-hit combo and a scaling damage boost.
Tear of the Cosmos
Can be transmutated into another Holy Water of Mithra.
