The first chapters of each character’s journey inOctopath Traveler 2are largely short and easy to deal with, and Ochette’s is no exception. This introduction to the beasting girl is a great exhibition of her unique abilities, bright and sunny disposition, and rather important role in the game.

Ochette is a hunter and provides for her people with plenty of foodstuffs - mostly meaty, mind you. There is nothing she loves more than Jerky, and often finds her mind wandering to the salty snack more often than not.

Town Phase: The Tombs Of The Wardenbeasts

Right off the bat, Ochette is forced to make a pretty important decision -whether to choosethe owl or the jackal as her eternal companionthroughout the story of Octopath Traveler 2. To make your decision, simply walk up to the potential animal companion of your choice and use Ochette’s nighttime Path Action, Befriend. This will consume a piece of Jerky - Ochette’s favorite food - and brings turns that animal into your eternal companion.

The major difference between the two companion options, apart from appearance, iswhich attacks they will use in battle. To put it shortly,Mahina the owl will use elemental attacks, andLajackal, the alternative, will use physical attacks. For a more in-depth explanation of the differences between the two, check out this guide.

After choosing, watch the cutscenes that unfold.

Battle Phase: King Iguana

Don’t worry about this boss fight and the intimidating appearance of the King Iguana himself, this is a tutorial battle through and through, serving to teach you about Breaking enemies.

The King Iguana is weak to Axes, Bows, and Lightning, so there is actually no way for Ochette to attack without Breaking the King Iguana.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Ochette fighting the King Iguana

This battle is where you’ll learn an important part of Octopath Traveler 2’s battle system - how to save up your Boosted attacks for when the enemy is broken. Once you have three Boost Points (indicated by the glowing red dots above a character’s HP and SP bars), unleash a fully-boosted attack on the King Iguana.

When the boss is weak, you’ll get a tutorial about Ochette’s unique battle ability:Capture. This will let you instantly remove a monster from a fight and eitheradd them toOchette’s limited roster of beasts(which she can use to fight in battle) orturn them into foodstuffs. Making liberal use of Capture is a great way to ensure Ochette has plenty of different skills to use and also farm useful items.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Beasting Village

Town Phase: Beasting Village

After the fight, you’ll be given control of Ochette again.Head north to the Beasting Villagefor a short cutscene in which a group of humans arrives to threaten the beastings for land.

This is your introduction to Ochette’s daytime Path Action,Provoke. This will put you into afight with the targetin which you can only use Ochette’s captured monsters and items.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Fully boosted Ochette fighting a villager

Walk up to the Villager with the green speech bubble above his head and use Provoketo fight him. He has a Break Threshold of two and isweak to Dagger attacks, which is handy - the King Iguana you just caught uses Dagger attacks.

Use the King Iguana twice to Break the Villager, and then finish him off with a fully-boosted King Iguana on the third turn.

Octopath Traveler 2 - The Monster Menu

After this battle, you’re introduced to another of Ochette’s abilities - herMonster menu. Here, you can look over the monsters Ochette has captured, view their attacks, and also enable or disable a setting that allows Ochette to automatically capture enemies she defeats herself.

Head into the menu by using thePath Action buttonandprepare the King Iguana. You’ll get30 Jerky- talk to the beating with a green speech bubble over his head to share the jerky with the village.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Ochette, Juvah, and Lajackal

After the cutscene, go findJuvah- he’s on the cliff at the top of the village. Head up there by climbing the stairs to the left. The ensuing cutscene will present you with the chapter’s proper objective - to find the human girl lost in the Tomb of the Wardenbeasts.

Leave the Beasting Village to the south to reach the Path to the Tomb of the Wardenbeasts.

Octopath Traveler 2 - The Path to the Tombs of the Wardenbeasts pond

Dungeon Phase: The Tombs Of The Wardenbeasts

This part of the chapter is split into two: the path to the tomb and the tomb itself. You’ll facerandom encountersall the way through this area, so don’t be afraid to useHealing Grapeswhen Ochette gets low on health. Remember, though, that Ochette will heal completely when she levels up!

All of the enemies here will have at least one weakness that Ochette can exploit. If you find yourself stuck, however, use your companion’s attack- if there is a weakness it can exploit, it will.

Octopath Traveler 2 - A Chest on the Path to the Tombs of the Wardenbeasts

When you come to the first split in the road, take the path to the back of the screen and walk up the ramp to the right, behind the ruins. The chest at the crest of the hill contains anUnerring Ring, an accessory that boosts accuracy.

Further along on the main road, you’ll reach a set of stairs into a pond. When you descend these, you’ll get into acanoe- these are found throughout Octopath Traveler 2 and allow you to traverse over the many waterways you’ll encounter. The patch of dry land to the south of the pond holds a chest, which contains anInspiriting Plum.

Octopath Traveler 2 - The Tombs of the Wardenbeasts

Walk under the waterfall and head all the way to the right, picking up theJerkyfrom the chest in the background, to reach the Tombs of the Wardenbeasts.

Theenemies inside the tombs are a bit harderthan the ones outside - if you’re struggling, grind a little outside until you boost Ochette’s level a little.

Octopath Traveler 2 - The girl at the end of the Tombs of the Wardenbeasts

Inside the Tombs, continue on to the right. When you reach a set of stairs leading down, take the alternate paths to the north and to the southto grab aBone(a consumable item that boosts physical defense) and aComposite Bow(a stronger weapon for Ochette that you should equip immediately).

After crossing the rope bridge to the east of the dungeon, near the location you chose your companion ten years previously, you’ll encounter the lost human girl.Befriend her here by giving her some of the Jerkyyou obtained from the King Iguana earlier.

After the cutscene, you’ll be on the path outside again. As youbacktrack toward Beasting Village, you’ll have a scripted fight against a gross monster called aMysterious Fledgling. It’sweak to Bow attacks. Eventually, you’ll reach a group of beastings.

If the convenientPeddlerand save point didn’t make it obvious, heading back to the Beasting Village will lead to a boss fight.Stock up on some Healing Grapes here- you don’t need to worry about grabbing any equipment upgrades, though.

You should have enough JP to learn a new skill by now - we recommend gettingCleaving Blow. This gives Ochette a strong axe attack that can be used to self-buff.

Boss Phase: Dark Entity

After reaching Beasting Village, a cutscene reveals Juvah being attacked by theDark Entity, a horrific beast. Naturally, Ochette resolves to take on this beast herself.

The Dark Entity is weak to Axe and Lightning attacks- it has two other weaknesses, but the former are the two that Ochette will definitely have access to. If you haveCleaving Blow, it’s well worth using - it will give Ochette a physical attack buff for a few turns, which is great for inflicting more damage.

After whittling down the enemy’s health enough, it willsummon a pack of three Mysterious Fledglings. These are annoying little enemies - they don’t deal much damage, but with three of them, the damage will add up.Use a single-boost Precise Shot to deal will all three of them at once- they’re weak to Bow attacks and you may use the ability to attack all three in one turn.

When the Dark Entity starts to give off anominous aura, it’s a sign that you should do all you may toBreak it- on its next turn, it will unleash a very powerful attack. If you cannot Break it in time, heal up; Darkstorm will deal over 200 damage.

Once you get far enough into the fight that you learn about Ochette’sLatent Ability, which gives her access to three very powerful moves, start focusing onhaving three Boost Points available when the Dark Entity is Broken, and then use afully-boosted Beastly Fangsattack. This should deal enough damage to finish the boss off.

With that, Ochette’s first chapter is over. If this is your first chapter, you’ll finally get access to the wider world at large and be placed just outside Beasting Village. If it isn’t your first chapter, you’ll simply resume your conversation with Ochette.
