Temenos isOctopath Traveler 2’s resident cleric, but he’s not like any other clerics you’ve encountered before in the realm of gaming. Temenos is an inquisitor for the church, and this involves quite a lot of doubt - he even doubts himself and his faith in the gods. This is paired with a sharp tongue and great wit, making Temenos a very memorable character.

He is also something of a detective, something that becomes readily apparent during his story chapters. In fact, even his first deals with a very important death. Here’s everything you need to know.
Battle Phase: Vide The Wicked God
This chapter begins with a view into the past, with you controlling none other than Aelfric the Flamebringer, one of the eight gods of Octopath Traveler’s world.Walk up the stepsto the north to begin the first fight of the chapter.
This is not a fight you can lose. Just useAelfric’s Blessingto begin with, and then only useAelfric’s Wrath. When prompted, useDivine Resolveand end the fight.
Town Phase: Flamechurch
After the opening scenes, you’ll be in control of Temenos. Your first objective is simply to take a stroll through town, so do this -your destination is the town’s entrance, where you’ll find a commotion.
You’ll meetCrickduring this scene, and after the scene plays out, you’ll be prompted toGuidehim. This is Temenos’sdaytime Path Actionand allows him torecruit an NPCfor a time. These NPCs can be summoned in battle to perform various moves, and some of them are very powerful.
Other characters (Agnea, Ochette, and Partitio) can also recruit NPCs, butTemenos is the only one who has no cost attached- as long as he is a high enough level, his Guide ability cannot fail.
Guide Crick using the Path Action. With Crick in tow, take theexit to the north.
Dungeon Phase: Flamechurch Pilgrims' Way
This is a very short ‘dungeon,’ but there are somerandom encountersto face here. During battle, summon Crick to make fights much easier.
Crick is a story NPC and so will not abandon you, butnormal NPCs will have a limited number of turns that they’ll be willing to fight. They will have to be re-recruited after that number elapses.
Climb the hill, opening the chest for anInspiriting Plumon the way. When you reach the top of the hill,Crick will join as a regular party member instead of a summoned NPC. Crick makes for a good tank - he canCoverTemenos, increase his own physical defense, and has a very powerful attack that targets all enemies.
Grab theHealing Grapefrom the chest to the right, and then enter the cave ahead of you. The paths to the left and right hold aTough Nutand aStimulating Ring, respectively. The right path requires that you use your canoe to cross the water.
Keep heading north on thecentral path, and you’ll reach the cathedral.
Town Phase: Flamechurch Cathedral
After the initial scenes here, you will be introduced to Temenos’snighttime Path Action,Coerce. This ability will thrust you into a fight with the NPC in question, but you don’t have to beat them - you simply have toreduce their Break points to zero. For this reason, it’s a good idea to use subclasses for Temenos that improve how many weaknesses he can target, but this is something you don’t have to worry about right now.
When you successfully Coerce a character, you’ll be granted theirinformation box- this is the same result as if you’d used Osvald, Hikari, or Castti’s abilities.
You’re looking for a person who knows a way into the cathedral. There are three individuals highlighted by the game’s minimap, but the one you’re looking for isVados the Architect. You’ll find himin front of the houses to the left of the brazier. Use your Path Action toCoerce him.
Vados is weak to Light, so useHoly Lighton him twice to end the battle.
Afterward, you’ll find out thatthere is an underground passage leading to the cathedral from the small building to the right of the area. Head there now, and climb down the ladder.
Dungeon Phase: Cathedral Cellars
This is another short dungeon, but stay on your toes -Crick is a powerful ally, but it’s important not to get complacent. You are fighting at night, now, though, which means Temenos’sMoonlight Judgment, which inflicts negative status ailments on all enemies at the start of any nighttime fights.
Before using your canoe to cross the waterway to the south, take the path to the north to nab aLight Soulstone. The platform in the middle of the waterway has another chest containing anInspiriting Plum.
When you reach the other end of the dungeon and climb the stairs, take thehidden path behind the statue at the top to reach the chest containing a Pilgrim Rod, which is a nice upgrade for Temenos.
Climb the ladder at the end of the dungeon to reach the Cathedral. Check therooms at the frontof the building to find anOlive of Lifeand anotherLight Soulstone. When you’re ready, head down the middle of the building toward the altar.
After the short scene, you’ll be thrust into a fight with the beast.
Boss Phase: Felvarg
This can be a tough battle thanks to theFelvarg’s high-damage attacks. Don’t be afraid to useTemenos’s healing spellanduse Crick to feed him Inspiriting Plumswhen he gets low on SP.
The Felvarg is weak to Sword and Light attacksbut not Staff attacks, so don’t bother trying to reduce the boss’s Break points with Temenos’s normal attack.
As with normal enemies, you’ll want tomake sure you have a healthy reserve of Boost Pointsbefore you break the enemy, as you’ll want to unleashfully-boosted attacks to deal as much damage as possible. When it’s broken, use Temenos’sHoly Lightand Crick’sSacred Slash. If you can time Sacred Slash before Holy Light, even better, as the former will reduce the Felvarg’s elemental defense.
When it is low on HP,the Felvarg will ‘set its sights’ on Temenos. This is a sign that it’s about to use its strongest attack, and it will alsoblock off its weaknesses, meaning you cannot interrupt the attack through normal means. You have three options at this point:
Once you’ve dealt with this phase of the battle, the rest should be easygoing - you might have trouble with SP, butInspiriting Plumsare easy to come by, so don’t worry about saving them.
After beating the boss, Temenos resolves to solve the mystery of this crime.
Detective Phase: The Murder Of The Pontiff
After the scene, you’ll be thrust into the thing that makes Temenos’s chapters unique:investigations. In these, Temenos reconstructs the scenes of crimes with his mind and examines the clues left behind.
Examine the two shining spots, the incense burner and the shards of window. After this, examine the candlestickbetween the pontiff and the beast. Another few scenes will play out - once they are over, enter the archives in front of you and examine the bookshelves right next to the ladderto end the chapter.
