It’s the beginning of a new year! That means we’re wrapping up all of the awards for games that came out in 2022. Steam’s Labor of Love award has just been bestowed uponCyberpunk 2077, but even fans of the game think there were more deserving titles out there last year.
As spotted byPCGamesN, players over on the game’s subreddit believe the award should have gone to an indie game rather than a huge triple-A title. Hard to justify a Labor of Love awardwhen a game is the product of relentless crunch.

One of the first comments under the Reddit post is “sad dwarf mining noises"from whereismyfemur. This is referring to Deep Rock Galactic, a co-op FPS where you mine across the galaxy. It ain’t much, but it’s honest work, and even Cyberpunk fans think it deserves some more respect for the continued joy it has brought people.
No Man’s Sky, a game that one commenter called, “the blueprint to fixing a broken game,” is also a favourite among the Cyberpunk community as one that deserved to win. Alongside Final Fantasy 14, it’s one of the few games of the last ten years to have launched in a truly dire state but turned things around with constant updates and improvements.
The winners from the last few years have all been live-service triple-A titles, with one indie exception:
2020 - Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
2021 - Terraria
Enolafaye pointed out, “It’s actually kinda funny that GTA 5 won twice and NMS never won.” UberSparten wrote, “Yeah gta can **** off as that’s a labour of a love of money.” One player, xjrsc, believes Edgerunners has given the game far too much good faith. “You don’t understand, they released an anime so the game is good now./s”
