Is it any big surprise that in the MMORPGGuild Wars 2, you’re able to make your own guilds?Like many MMORPGs, these are meant to connect players over a shared love of the game and a commitment to participating in some shared activities together!

However, creating your own guild can be a daunting task. There are tons of mechanics to keep in mind and it will take a lot of time and energy to build something that can stand on its own. In this guide,we’ve broken down and explained everything you need to knowin order to get started.

How To Create The Guild & The Basics

Creating your very own guild is as simple as opening the guild menu with ‘G’ and hitting the ‘Create Guild’ button! It will cost 1 gold and you need to choose 2 things immediately,so make sure you have them ready:

It’s possible to change these down the road, but it involves putting in a support request, so try topick something you can live with!Destiny’s Edge is the most famous guild in Tyria, but no pressure.

Representation

Players can be a part of up to 5 guildsat any one time. However, you can only ‘represent’ one guild at a time. When you’re representing a guild, the little box next to their name in the guild menu will be checked, and their tag will appear next to your character’s name. Different characters on your account can be representing two different guilds, so you may need to remember to switch the guild when you log in to a different character.

If you’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 for a while, you may recall that guilds used to require you to represent them a certain percentage of the time you were online. While some guilds still have requirements like this, it’s far less important now. It used to be that how much a guild’s members represented the guild would affect the guild’s ‘Influence’ (see below), and thus affect the progress the guild could make. It’s less important now because Influence has been traded out for a new currency, Favor, which is earned by participating in Guild Missions.

Types Of Guilds

You may have an idea of what you want your guild to be like when you make it. Perhaps you’re just making a personal guild for you and your friends who play. Perhaps you want to conquer PvP and become the best of the best! If you haven’t thought of your reasons - and, indeed, what shape you want the guild to take - it’s time to start! Here are some basic forms guilds often take:

Guilds tend to exist ona spectrum between laid-back and hardcore.A guild on the laid-back end of the spectrum is happy to have players who are interested in any and all parts of gameplay, and probably won’t be too hasty to kick you out if you don’t log on for a while. A guild on the hardcore end of the spectrum, meanwhile, is heavily dedicated to its particular niche of gameplay and will probably want you to be an active member of the community (which means logging on regularly). Somewhere in the middle, you get guilds with preferences about what they do as a group, but aren’t picky about players branching out.

Guild Emblem

After you create a guild, you’ll be able to pick your guild’s emblem! This is basically your logo, and it doesn’t cost anything to make it or change it. There are lots of fun options to choose from. Pick something good, because that logo will appear on guild armor and weapons in-game.

Membership

Your guild’s membership is the most important part! Don’t neglect these settings. You can invite anyone to your guild the same way you’d invite them to a party. Anyone from any server can be a part of your guild, including people from the EU if you’re in the US, and vice versa.

The first important thing to know is that, when you start, you’re limited to a few members. To increase that limit, you’ll need to find a Guild Registrar (the easiest one is in the Postern Ward of Lion’s Arch) and pay a small fee. You have to have 80 percent of the current limit of members in order to upgrade to the next tier.

Recruiting

If you’ve been playing for a while, you’ll know thatmost guilds recruit using the World chat feature. They have little blurbs that describe the guild to give you a sense of their focus and energy, and then usually ask you to send a whisper to the player if you’re interested. They may include details such as…

This method is tried and true - it’s hard to beat. You have to compete with all the other guilds doing the same thing, though, so you should be sure to work out a message that’s true to your guild’s spirit, not boring, and very clear - if you can squeeze it all in!

Here area few tips for excelling at recruitment:

Ranks

Once your guild grows, it will be important toorganize your members into ranks that allow them to perform different key guild functions. These can be edited in the guild menu. You can have up to 10 ranks in total and give them whatever names you like. Three ranks - Leader, Officer, and Member - will be automatically created when your guild is established.

For small guilds, you probably won’t need much more than these three ranks. However, as things get more complicated, creating more will be an asset. You cantoggle on or off all of the following permissionsfor each rank as you prefer:

Guild Missions & Currencies

Guild Missions are the most crucial part of guild life these days. They’re weekly challenges for your guild to take on that are categorized into Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulties. There are benefits for the player and the guild as a whole for participatingin these, which are scaling depending on the difficulty of the mission:

70 silver

1+

1, rare or better

75 silver

2, rare or better

80 silver

3+

At first, you’ll only have access to a few, but you’llget more as your guild level goes up(see below for more details on guild levels and upgrading):

Unlocks:

Upon Upgrading The Guild Hall War Room With ‘Mission Slot: WvW’

Upon Upgrading The Guild Hall Guild Arena With ‘Mission Slot: PvP’

Upon Upgrading The Guild Hall Guild Market With ‘Mission Slot: PvE’

If you want to receive Guild Missions for a certain game mode, you may set a Guild Mission Preference in the settings. This will determine the kinds of missions you receive in the first three categories (Easy, Medium, and Hard). Your options are:

Favor & Guild Commendations

Favor is a currency communal to the entire guild.Generally, you use it to purchase your guild hall, then upgrade it. It can also buy consumables from a guild requisitioner. Each week, the guild can earn a maximum of 2000 Favor, and you cannot hold more than 6000 Favor at one time.

Guild Commendations are the unique currency that the player earnsin exchange for participating in Guild Missions. You can only earn between 12 and 15 Guild Commendations per week. They are accepted by vendors in your guild hall or Guild Commendation Traders in exchange for items. Depending on who you’re talking to, you could buy ascended gear, guild weapons and armor, special recipes, unique weapons,or even adorable little miniatures!

The communal guild currency used to beInfluence, but that has been entirely removed from the game. If you have any hanging around, it can be given to an NPC in exchange for Favor.Guild Merits, like Influence, are also a form of currency that has become obsolete, but these cannot be traded in for Guild Commendations.

Guild Halls

Once you have a significant number of members, the first step to improving your guild further is to claim a guild hall. There are four available: two are set in the Heart of Maguuma, one is in the Crystal Desert, and one is in Cantha. The major differences between them are their aesthetics and maneuverability.

If you want a preview of each guild hall, talk to the associated Guild Hall Explorer!

To purchase a guild hall, you’ll need 100 gold and 150 favor.Once you’ve collected that, find the Guild Hall Explorer for your preferred guild hall (most easily found in Lion’s Arch at the Guild Initiative Headquarters) and purchase the Expedition upgrade associated with it. The player will need to have the ‘Claim Guild Hall’ permission and own the associated expansion.

After purchasing your guild hall expedition, you need to collect a team of capable, level-80 players in order tobattle the monsters who have overrun the area. You can generally expect to deal with several phases of region-specific monsters before being faced with a challenging boss. Windswept Haven is considered the hardest to do, so avoid it if you’re worried about the challenge. You can also sometimes ask people to help out; for small guilds that are only meant to have a handful of players but still want a guild hall, larger guilds will sometimes volunteer players to participate in the expedition.

Guild Level

Your guild’s level willstart at 0 when you create it and can be increased to a maximum of 69.It will remain at 0 until you claim your guild hall, at which point you’ll reach guild level 1! From there, continue to build upgrades to increase the guild level further.

Guild Upgrades & Enhancements

Once you have a guild hall, it’s time to start adding upgrades! Upgrades that you complete here will require a lot of resources and time, so get started early. However, theseupgrades also provide significant buffs for your guild to take advantage of, as well as new amenities and vendors.

Your first step is toconstruct the Tavern;doing that will give you access to everything else. After that, prioritize the Guild Mine, since it will give you a unique resource - Aetherium - that you need for almost all of the other upgrades!

We won’t detail every upgrade and its requirements, but we will list the available ones for you to skim and prioritize:
