The open world ofGenshin Impactis filled with different puzzles that can be quite hard to solve. Each area has unique mechanisms and the game will tell you how they work whenever you encounter them for the first time. Sumeru is the fourth region in the game, and it has some of the most difficult puzzles.

After finishing Dirge Of Bilqis and Tadhla the Falcon quest series, you’re able to place five chess pieces in the Safhe Shatranj area, which will trigger the Apocalypse Lost quest. After finishing this quest, the same puzzle will ask for seven Activation Devices that are scattered all around the Gilded Desert.
Border Fort Activation Device Location
As you enter the Safhe Shatranj area from the teleport to its right side,the first tile you’ll see will require the Border Fort Activation Device. To find the device, you must head to the Teleport Waypoint in Aaru Village. This area can be found on the right side of the Gilded Desert near the Statue of the Seven.
Once you teleport to the area,go straight in the direction shown above and turn right to go down the stairs. You’ll see the device floating in the air as soon as you turn right. You have to follow it for a while before you can claim it. Head back to Safhe Shatranj and fit the piece in the same tile to get rewards.
Khaj-Nisut Activation Device Location
Just after Border Fort, the next piece will require the Khaj-Nisut Activation Device. As the name makes it clear, head over to the Teleport Waypoint to the left of Khaj-Nisut, andget to the place where you first saw the Eremite Mercenaries in the Golden Slumber quest line. As you get there, you’ll see some grapples going to the main building.
Use these grapples to get to the two platforms on your way to Khaj-Nisut. There will be some Primal Constructs here, but you don’t have to fight them.Keep using the grapples until you reach the main building and the Activation Device will be just below the last grapple. Claim the device and place it to get rewards.
Deshret’s Glass Goblet Activation Device Location
This one can be quite hard if you didn’t pay attention during the Dirge Of Bilqis quest. After activating three mechanisms during thethree parts of the Dune-Entombed Fecundity quest, Liloupar will take you to the middle where you’ll fight her sister. After the fight, you’ll activate the elevator to go up to the Eternal Oasis.
This quest is necessary to get the Activation Device puzzle. Liloupar also mentions that Deshret’s goblet lies in the center. To find this device,you can Teleport to the Waypoint shown above, given that you unlocked it during Dirge Of Bilqis. The Activation Device will be right beside the Waypoint, and it will take you around the arena before you can claim it.
When you start the Dirge Of Bilqis quest,you’ll meet Azariq at the entry of the Temple of Gurabad. Here, you’ll have to use a fan mechanism to get rid of the sand pile to open the main door. This Activation Device is right at the main door of this temple, and you have to follow it back outside before claiming it.
To get there,teleport to the Waypoint to the right of Safhe Shatranj and follow the path to your left. This path has a bunch of Primal Constructs and Fungi that might aggro on you. Climb the stairs to get to the top where you’ll find the entrance to the temple. You can place this to the piece on the far end of the chess puzzle.
King Deshret’s Pillar Activation Device Location
You first saw the main King Deshret’s Pillar during the Golden Slumber quest line. There are many pillars in the underground ruins where you have to submit different orbs, which makes it quite confusing to find the correct one.Teleport to the Waypoint marked by an arrow in the picture above as this is closest to the location.
Once you teleport to the location, you’ll see a bunch of stairs leading to a doorway beside two giant statues, as shown above.You can use the series of grapples to get near the entrance. Keep going straight once you enter and the Activation Device will take you to the blue projection in front of the pillar.
Soulferry Activation Device Location
This can be one of the most confusing devices to find becauseSoulferry only appears once when you’re doing An Introduction To Indoor Archaeology quest. As you get inside the Khemenu Temple, you’ll have to explore two paths to get blue orbs for the pillars. One of these paths will have Jeht and Benben, while the other one will have Jebrael.
To find this Activation Device, you have to teleport to the Waypoint marked above and head to the room where you found Jebrael. As you go up the stairs, you’ll see the device shining to your right.It will take you into the Soulferry room and you can claim it right in front of the structure.
The Mausoleum Of King Deshret Activation Device Location
As the name suggests, the final Activation Device can be found just outside the Mausoleum,which is the biggest structure on the map of the Gilded Desert. Teleport to the Waypoint marked above and head back outside the temple. You’ll see the Activation Device in the middle of your path.
Once you get all the devices,you can get a Remarkable Chest for each of them when you place them in the right piece. These chests give you fivePrimogemsand a blueprint for your teapot each. You can also teleport to any of these areas by triggering their respective chess piece at any point.
