Chained Echoesfeatures a simple yet robust skill and abilities system, letting you upgrade equipped skills with SP in order to master them. In a game like this, you will want to make use of them as often as possible.

It’s a system that works similarly to the skill Crystals and equipment in Final Fantasy 9, insofar as you must have the skills equipped to your characters for them to earn SP and rank up. You can use SP to level the skills you don’t have equipped, but you need to have them unlocked through a Grimoire Shard first.
Skill Points In Chained Echoes Explained
Skill Points in Chained Echoes, or SP, is a currencyawarded after winning battles against enemies and bosses. These should not be confused with the boss-specific Grimoire Shards, which is the item you receive after you beat a boss allowing you to unlock new skills.
When you earn SP from a fight, the number gained will go towardsall your characters' currently equipped combat and passive skills. At the same time, the number ofSP awarded from a fight will also go into each character’s pool of SP.
For example, let’s say Glenn currently hasthree active and passive skills, all of which need 50 SP to level up. Glenn also has110 SP in his total pool available. From the most recent fight, you were rewardedwith two SP;this will take the SP needed tolevel up to 48 SPand increase Glenn’stotal gained SP to 112.
Only the skills you have equipped on your characters will gain SP from combat.
The idea is that the total pool of SP gained could be used to level up abilities you don’t currently have set as active.
Every learnable combat and passiveskill in Chained Echoes has three levels. The first rank is the default, with the subsequent ranks powering up the ability in question by a certain amount or lowering the TP cost. This gives you two ways in which you’re able to level your abilities and passives.
First, you can let your abilities earn SP by having them equipped. This works as you might expect, but it is a slow way to level your abilities. Otherwise, you can spend your accumulated SPto level one of your moves. If you have 500 SPand the skill you want to improve has100 SP to go, you can spend 100 SP to level it up right then and there. This would leave you with 400 SP left over in your pool.
Each character has an individual pool of SP,meaning you don’t have to worry about spending all the points on one character.
When To Spend Skill Points
Skill Points come and go in Chained Echoes. Not only can they be farmed in excess, but you willnaturally get more as you play through and fight tougher enemies. SP gains can be further increased byrecruiting certain Clan Members, unlocking passive effects that will give you a chance to earn more from a fight.
To this end, themain skills that you want to focus on should have no problem levelling up naturallyby the normal SP gain from fights, meaning you canspend SP from your available pool to either levelthem to the max as soon as possible orfocus on levelling up a skillyou want to use but don’t currently have equipped.
SP caps at 999,so you should always make sure you spend it before you hit this number.
Spending SP will be on a case-by-case basis. If, for example, you feel that one character isn’t doing enough damage, you could spend SP to increase the level of their most powerful attack.
Alternatively, you could spend your SP on Passive Abilities, such as Attack Up, TP Cost Down, Hp Up, and so on.Having two of the same Passive skill will stack, which means if you max out two Attack Up skills for one character, you may raise their damage by 60 percent.
Focusing on one aspect of your character, instead of trying to spread it all out at the beginning, will be the best practiceon how to spend your SP. Playing through the game will naturally max out a bunch of your abilities,so you should use SP as and when you want to get a skill levelled in a hurry.
Grimoire Shards And Learning New Skills In Chained Echoes
Grimoire Shards are obtained by defeating bosses. You don’t level up in the conventional way you might expect in an RPG like Chained Echoes, instead you gain access tonew abilities by spending your Grimoire Shards. These serve as your “level-ups” in the game, letting you unlock attacks, passive skills, or permanent stat boosters.
To learn a new skill or ability, you must have an available Grimoire Shard.Go to the skills menu and then take a look at all the available skills. More skills and stat boosts will unlockbased on how many Grimoire Shards you have spent,so don’t be shy when it comes to using them up.There are enough shards in the game to unlock every ability, and each character receives shards individually, meaning they are not a shared resource.
