While it’s great to have a giant world to explore inRisen, it can sometimes be difficult to navigate through the different aspects of the game. In the beginning, your ship crashes on a random island and you’re one of the two people who survived. Starting with nothing, you can make your way to glory while playing this game.

You can also choose any path between sword fighting, staff fighting, or magic. The destiny of the island depends on the choices you make, and every action can have a consequence. In this open-world experience, you have to take every step with precaution.
Search Everywhere You Can
While exploration and foraging are the main focus of any open-world game, it becomes even more important when it comes to Risen. Manyitems are scattered across the map that can be easily missed since they don’t have any glow on them. You need to pay attention and get close to anything that stands out to see if you may pick it up.
Try to look for items that have a contrasting color with their surroundings. It’s not a necessity that you’ll be able to pick them up, but it’s better to be thoroughif you don’t want to regret it later.
Moreover, you’ll find many scattered houses and ruins in every area. These places usually contain one or more chests that can give you gold and many other items. Some of these chests will be locked with a key,but you can usually find those keys around the same place. If the key isn’t there, you can use a lock pick to open them.
Although, your character won’t know how to pick locks at the start. You can learn this skill in the area controlled by Don. This area will also teach you many other things like hunting and using a bow. You can increase many stats like strength in this area as well.
Don’t Keep Your Weapon Out When Not Needed
It’s also important to know that having your weapon in your hand isn’t always a good idea. When you get a weapon, you can head over to your inventory and click on it to equip it in the first slot.Pressing the button for this slot will lead to an animation of your character pulling out the weapon.
Of course, it’s necessary to draw your weapon and shield when you’re in battle, but it’s also important to put it back as soon as you’re done. This is becauseyou won’t be able to interact with anything when the weapon is in your hands. This includes random items around the area, mobs that you defeated, and even NPCs that were killed.
It’s already hard to figure out which item can be picked up, andit’ll become even harder when you won’t get the prompt as you get closesince it’ll make you think that it’s not interactable.
Although, this mechanic doesn’t work in the same way when it comes to torches. This is another item that is equipped in your hands, but your character can still interact with everything with a torch. Moreover, you have to drop the torch on the ground if you want to pull out any weapon as well.
Beware Of Traps In Caves
When it comes to medieval open-world games, underground ruins and caves are arguably the most fun part of the exploration. This is because of the dangerous environment portrayed in these areas, and the caves in Risen are no different.Be ready to fight hordes of enemies whenever you enter a cave in this game.
There are also other dangers that you have to look out for. For example, some caves have tiles that look just a little different from its surrounding, but these tiles will open up, forcing you to fall. In the first cave, you’ll only find a Grave Moth waiting for you down below, but it can be lethal if you fall into these traps late game.
The best way to avoid these traps is byusing a torch at all times and walking through the cave slowly. If you feel like anything around you is suspicious, get your weapons ready for battle.
There Is Fall Damage
There are times when you’re going up a steep path in Risen, and it’s not hard to take one wrong step to fall from a great height. This fall can be lethal since the game features quite a lot of fall damage. You won’t take any damage if you fall from a couple of feet above, but the damage will increase significantly with height.
This damage can be reduced during the late game when you upgrade your abilities, but it’s best to be cautious in the early game. While it might be easy to avoid great heights in the daytime, you’ll be surprised by how hard it gets when it’s night and you’re in the swamp.
Watch Where You Swing
There are many scenarios in the game where you fight alongside a certain NPC. In fact, you can aggro certain mobs and bring them to any NPC if you want to use them as a meat shield. Since these group fights are common, you need to be cautious while swinging your blade or shooting arrows with your bow.
Therewon’t be any consequences if you hit your ally during the battle, but this will reduce their health. It’s important to know that your allies can get knocked out in battle quite easily.
The real problem occurs when you swing at a friendly NPC by mistake. This can happen if you try to talk to them with a weapon in hand, orif you are spamming the attack button during the battle and hit them as soon as the enemies dies. When this happens, the NPC will instantly start attacking you.
If you’re in a team of multiple NPCs that are in the same group, they’ll all attack you at the same time. If you lose all your health in these battles, your weapon will be taken away from you but you’ll slowly regain health and get back up. Sometimes, an NPC might also loot your items while you’re down.
Some Animals Are Territorial
During the first few hours of this game, you’ll only be fighting different animals like Hungry Wolf or Grave Moth. Most of these enemies will attack you as soon as you get in their aggro range, and they’ll chase you for ages as well. Although, some animals in the game are territorial, and they’re not aggressive unless they think you pose a threat.
For example, Boars are one of the species you’ll see at the start, and they’ll start growling at you when you get close. These animals won’t start attacking you if you maintain distance, but they’ll charge at you when you get too close. Since it’s your choice to fight them, they are also significantly hard to defeat.
There Are Many Ways To Regain Health
From the very beginning of the game, your character will start losing health quickly while fighting different animals and NPCs. This is because of the irregular attack pattern of the animals since they can attack you continuously. It’s hard to avoid these fights, but there are quite a lot of ways to regain health as well.
You’llfind a few health potions that come in three different sizes while exploring, and these potions regain different amounts of health. Other than that, you may also cook meat on any fire once you find a Frying Pan, and this meat will recover your health as you eat it.
You don’t always have to spend items from your inventory to regain health since water barrels exist. These barrels can be found around different houses or encampments. Drinking out of them will regain your health slowly, and you might have to do it a bunch of times if your health is low.
But it’s a free way to get your health back.Make sure you don’t use this method in the middle of a battlesince you’re stuck in the animation for a few seconds.
Saving Is Important
The game features both autosave and manual saving mechanics, but the autosave only occurs when you progress in the story significantly. This leads to many scenarios where you will lose a lot of progress if you log out without saving manually. To do this, simply head to the main menu and go over to the Save tab.
Although, this problem becomes more common when you’re playing this game on a platform where you’re able to tab out.Whenever you tab out of Risen, it has a chance of crashing upon tabbing back in. This will lead to the loss of all your progress and you’ll start back where you saved last.
To prevent this, you need to make sure you’re not in the middle of a dialogue while tabbing out. When you’re able to move freely, make sure you save before tabbing out and stay on the main menu screen. This will reduce the chances of a crash and you’re able to also start where you left off if it does.
