Although Wizards have made the finals shorter for competitors to compete more easily, there’s still a lot going on within the next few days. So whether you’re enjoying the preliminaries or playing to win, here are all the details you’ll need to carry you through from day one to the final rewards.

Preliminary Events

In the run-up to the final, preliminary events are held. Since it’s a decathlon, that means ten events in total withtwo events taking place together every three days.

Now for the juicy details. The preliminaries will run fromJanuary 1-16, and entry costs are2,000 gold or 400 gems per event. You can play each preliminary as much as you want, but the format for each event is different, and matches are eitherbest-of-one or best-of-three.

Qualifying for the Final

If youget the maximum number of wins in an event (seven for best-of-one and five for best-of-three) you’ll get a decathlon token, wherethree tokens make one Arena Decathlon Finals entry — plus a Silver Sundering Titan sleeve. Collecting all Ten tokens from the Decathlon preliminaries also rewards you with the Gold Sundering Titan sleeve, with all finals tokens and Gold Sundering Dragon sleeves handed out by Wednesday 18 January.

Each Decathlon token must come from a different event;duplicates from the same event will only count as one token.

Decathlon Final Details

If you’ve got an entry token, your next stop is the MTG Arena Decathlon Final. The format isbest-of-three duplicate sealed, meaning everyone who competes receives the same pool of cards to build their deck with. Finalists will play until they getfour wins or one loss— with prizes available to those who win one or more matches.

The Decathlon Final is also aphantom event, meaning you won’t keep any of the cards you draft.

The eventstarts January 21 at 8 am PT, withsignup closing January 22 at 8 am PT, and thefinal concluding January 22 11 am PT.
