There’s a scene in M3GAN, which was also shown in the trailers, where she stabs someone with a machete. I won’t spoil who, but funnily enough, that scene usesDark Souls’backstab and parry sound, something that the subreddit highlighted last night.
There’s an added oomph to Dark Souls' ripostes, as it uses a unique, much louder sound than other attacks, trailing off into an echoing thud. While many associate it with Dark Souls now, it looks like it came from a sound library, one that M3GAN also tapped into.

Even among games, sounds are pulled from the same library and reused. You might’ve noticedSkyrimsound effects in the firstWitcher, or Bloodborne’s Cleric Beast in Horizon Zero Dawn’s' Clawstriders. Speaking of Skyrim, you’ve no doubt heard that bear roar countless times across movies, TV, and games.
So, you could say this is just two different studios using the same sound library and leave it at that. Or, you could spin it as M3GAN being set in a futuristic Dark Souls world that looks similar to ours - maybe this isthe Age of Dark? It would certainly explain a lot.
If that is the case, then M3GAN isn’t just a slasher villain going on a murder spree, but a red phantom parrying a bunch of poor office workers before thrusting her machete in their guts. It looks a lot better than that awkward circling dance people do before landing a backstab - I’m not sure that’d translate to film.
A lot of properties share sounds from libraries, but the riposte sound in particular also cropped up in Jujitsu Kaisen, so maybe M3GAN shares a universe with it as well as Dark Souls. Reading too much into it? Absolutely.
One last fun fact before we wrap up - one commenter pointed out that a Love Island-style show in Belgium even used the Bonfire theme a few years ago. It isa very peaceful ambient noise.
