InPharaoh A New Erathere are several different types of housing, and each one has different levels of evolution within it. Higher-level houses will allow more residents, and in turn, will pay more taxes. However, they also demand more services, which all need workers.

Balancing housing levels is tricky, especially since very high-level houses have occupants who no longer work, increasing tax at the cost of reducing your workforce. This guide looks at each housing level, what it requires, and what it offers your city in return.
Housing Overview
Houses start as marked-out vacant lots and then evolve througheight main different types, each with subtypes. To evolve a house you’ll need to offer progressively more goods and services.Each level of housing has different requirements for these, and you’ll also need toimprove desirabilityto get through the different levels.
Taxesfor the city are based on thenumber of occupants, housing level, and city tax rate.Therefore, it’s advantageous toevolve your houses by at least a few levels.
You’ll want toprovide all housingwith coverage from aFirehouse, Architect’s Post, Apothecary, and Physician. This will help prevent fire, collapse, and disease, all of which negatively affect your city.

Hut
Thefirst level of housing is marked out vacant lots. Then there are two types ofhut,crude and sturdy.This first level of housingsimply requires basics.

Hutslook dull and willaffect the desirability of the local area.While they don’t need more than food and water they also hold few occupants, soyou’ll want to evolve past this stageas quickly as possible.
Huts will use well water, but you’ll soon need awater source,so it’s easier to just build one to begin with.
Shanty
AShantyis basicallya shack with a little colour.It has two types,meager and common.You’ll evolve to common almost instantly if you placed awater source instead of a wellearly on.

While a Shanty looks a little nicer, it’sstill undesirable to live near.You’ll also need tostart paying attention to godsas soon as you build this first temple.If you have a patron god, then one temple to them and some shrines is fine.However, if you don’tkeep a good balancethe gods will soon anger.
Cottage
Cottageslook a little nicer,haveminimal service requirements,and stilldon’t require any goodsto be manufactured. The two types of cottage arerough and ordinary.

Cottagesare a nice level to keep your houses at since they are reasonably good-looking andhold a decent amount of workers.This means you canset up pockets of themto funnel workers to different areas.
The services Cottages requireuse far fewer workers than the housing can provide, making them perfect for a city using recruiters.

Homestead
Homesteadsalso have two types,modest and spacious.While theyrequire more servicesthe chances are youalready provided a Physicianto keep your city disease free, so this level of housing iseasy to achieve.

Apartmentsare one of the last housing typesbefore the requirements to evolve turn steep. They come in two types,Modest and spacious.

Manorsare high capacity high tax paying residences that come in four forms,common, spacious, elegant, and stately.As they evolve they willrequire space to expand into.The easiest way to provide this is tosurround them with gardens.
