But there are no pleasantries without strife, and you can’t save the world without fighting for it. If you want to survive the fierce battles that the land of Sylvarant has to offer, then you’re going to need the best armor you can get your hands on — you can’tunleash your Mystic Artesif you can’t even take a hit.

10Lloyd – Mumbane

Lloyd wears equipment of the Armor type in his body slot, meaning that he’s best served by the Mumbane. The Mumbane is a type of armor exclusive to Lloyd, giving 70 defense as well as resistances to Lightning, Earth, Ice, and Dark.

Since the Mumbane doesn’t provide Llloyd with any defense against Fire, it pairs best with the Star Helm for your head slot or the Star Guantlets for your hands — both pieces of equipment give the resistance to Fire his body slot lacks. you may do both, but you’ll get more bang for your buck if you use a more defensive piece of gear for the slot opposite of the one you choose — go with the Star Helm and Hyper Gauntlets for greater accuracy and attack speed, or the Golden Helm and Star Gauntlets for superior defense.

9Kratos (And Zelos) – Golden Armor

Kratos and Zelos both wear equipment of the Armor type, similar to Lloyd, making their most powerful body equipment the Golden Armor. This shiny piece of protection gives its wearer 70 defense on top of Water, Wind, Fire, and Light resistances. The main issue with the Golden Armor is not its performance, but the convoluted series of events it takes to get it.

The Golden Armor pairs well with the Hyper Gauntlets and Golden Helm, since there are no high level helmets or guantlets that can cover the Golden Armor’s elemental weaknesses — these together will give you 51 more defense along with greater accuracy and attack speed.

8Zelos (And Kratos) – Dragon Mail

If the daunting task of getting your hands on the Golden armor deters you, worry not — the Dragon Mail is a marginally weaker alternative that still plays well into the late game. It provides 65 defense as well as some Fire resistance, at the relatively simple cost of defeating the Dark Dragon boss.

Similar to the Golden Armor, this Armor pairs well with the Hyper Gauntlets and Golden Helm for great defense and stat bonuses; a weaker piece of armor might be considered if you expect trouble with elements other than Fire. The Rare Helm can provide lightning defense at the cost of six defense, and the Rare Guantlets give Earth resistance at the cost of three, making them another possible pairing with the Dragon Mail.

7Sheena – Kannazuki

Sheena only wears robes as body equipment, having her strongest robe in the Kannazuki. This robe is exclusive to Sheena, giving her 60 defense as well as decent elemental resistance to Wind. You won’t be able to obtain it if you lose to Kuchinawa, though.

The Kannazuki works best with the Katz Mittens for your hands slot and the Magical Ribbon for your head, providing Sheena with 39 extra defense. The Elemental Circlet can give you increased intelligence in exchange for slightly less defense, but generally higher defense is in Sheena’s best interest.

6Sheena – Shaman Dress

If you lost to Kuchinawa and are locked out of the Kannazuki, do not despair — the Shaman Dress is here to support you. With a touch less defense, the Shaman Dress provides decent elemental resistance to Darkness as well as superior resistance to Light.

What works for the Kannazuki works just as well for the Shaman Dress — the Katz Mittens and Magical Ribbon together can help rectify the lower defense of this slightly weaker robe. Unlike the Kannazuki, though, the Shaman Dress does not want to be paired with the Elemental Circlet, since it’s already suffering from lowered defense.

5Raine – Spirit Robe

Raine, like Sheena, wears robes for her body equipment slot, making the Spirit Robe her best possible option for torso defense. Tying with the Kannazuki for maximum Robe defense, the Spirit Robe provides 60 defense as well as resistance against all possible elements.

Since Raine has greater elemental resistance, it’s better for her to wear the Katz Mittens and Elemental Circlet with this Robe for the great defense mixed with the intelligence that the Circlet provides — her greater focus on magic makes the intelligence a boon worth a slightly lower defense score.

4Regal – Mortality Cloak

Regal uses Cloaks in his body equipment slot, providing defense comparable to the Robe class of equipment. His best Cloak is the Mortality Cloak, a cloak exclusive to him. It provides a flat 60 defense with no elemental resistances.

Aifread’s Hat for your head and the Shield Ring for your hands are the perfect pair to wear with the Mortality Cloak, giving 35 more defense overall. If you’re worried about having no elemental resistances, you’re able to also equip the Star Cap over Aifread’s Hat for some Fire resistance at the cost of one defense — regardless, there is little difference in the total defense gained between them.

3Genis – Star Cloak

Oddly, Genis shares the Cloak category of body equipment with Regal, being able to wear a lot of the same Cloaksdespite their obvious size difference. Genis’s best Cloak is his exclusive Star Cloak, which boasts 60 defense as well as some Fire resistance to boot.

Since Genis gets some Fire resistance with this Cloak, there isn’t really any reason not to stick to Aifread’s Hat and the Shield Ring when wearing the Star Cloak — there are no other hats or bracelets for Genis to wear that will provide resistances worth losing defense for.

2Colette – Elemental Guard

Colette’s body equipment slot is filled with Guards, her best Guard being her exclusive Elemental Guard. This Guard will give you 66 defense as well as Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth resistances to keep Colette safe as she unleashes her Angel Skills.

Colette’s Elemental Guard works the best with the Katz Mittens and Elemental Circlet, able to more comfortably sacrifice head slot defense for more intelligence thanks to her superior body defense — but if you want Colette to have tower-like defense, the Magical Ribbon is a perfectly fine alternative for headgear.

1Presea – Prism Guard

Presea, everybody’s favorite close-ranged axe-wielding warrior, naturally uses Guards in her body slot to keep her protected. Her exclusive armor, the Prism Guard, gives her 66 defense as well as elemental resistance across the board, save for Dark resistance. Funnily enough, this armor actually gives negative Dark resistance, making it the armors only real downside.

The Katz Mittens and the Magical Ribbon are the definite choices to pair with the Prism Guard, since the intelligence that a Circlet gives is wasted on her. Given her naturally high defense, she becomes unstoppable when given this impenetrable armor set.
