There are many reasons whyMafiais considered one ofthe best gangster games ever. It has a compelling story, great characters, a detailed world, and fantastic mission design. That last point is particularly important, as nobody wants to play a game that has bland and repetitive levels. Thankfully, the original Mafia is the exact opposite.

Besides one infamous racing sequence, almost all the missions in the first Mafia are compelling in some regard. And while the Definitive Edition altered some things, it maintains the same quality. The following collection of missions is the best the title has to offer.

8Happy Birthday!

Birthdays can be a lot of fun unless you’re a corrupt politician working with the Morello Crime Family. Roberto Ghillotti finds this out during the Happy Birthday mission. In this one, you infiltrate Ghillotti’s steamboat during his birthday party. And when you get the chance, you gun him down.

The uniqueness of this mission is what makes it stand out, as it is more like a Hitman level than a typical Mafia one. This is because you need to find and use a disguise to get onto the boat. Then you need to remain inconspicuous as you set up the kill.

7Omerta

Omerta is an important mission from a story perspective, as it revolves around you dealing with former ally Frank Colletti. He’s just betrayed the gang, and now he’s under FBI protection. So, you aren’t able to just run up and shoot him in the head. You’re required to do some tailing and sleuthing to discover he’s leaving the country on a plane. Once you know that, you have to either sneak or shoot your way to the hangar to stop him.

The story of this mission is what makes it interesting, as Frank never seemed like a guy who would willingly turn on the crew. And you don’t truly know why he did it until the end of the mission. This makes it all the more engaging as it adds a bit of mystery to the escapade.

6You Lucky B*****d

While he kills plenty of people, Tommy isn’t amongthe greatest assassins in gaming history. This is proven in the You Lucky B*****d mission when he attempts to kill Sergio, who is one of Morello’s top men.

It seems an easy task at first as you plant a bomb under his car. However, a young woman then enters the vehicle and explodes. This doesn’t dissuade you, though, as you discover that he’s actually at a diner. So, you bust in there with Paulie, Sam, and some tommy guns, but the target still gets away. In the end, you have to go down to the harbor and wipe out most of Sergio’s crew to reach him. The mission is both fun and comical.

5The Death Of Art

The Death Of Art is the final mission of the game, and it’s a great one. It gets off to a heartbreaking start when you discover that Paulie is dead. Not long later, you discover that Sam is the killer. So, it becomes a pure revenge mission, where you fight through all of Sam’s allies to reach him.

What makes it great is how emotional the entire escapade is since Paulie and Sam have been your friends throughout the adventure. On top of that, all the shooting takes place in a large art gallery, which makes for a unique and aesthetically-pleasing battleground.

4A Trip To The Country

On the surface, A Trip To The Country sounds like a routine mission. After all, you only have to collect a shipment from the countryside. Yet, when you get there, the place seems deserted. From there, you do plenty of investigating and fighting.

The investigating moments are very atmospheric because of the rain, thunder, and countryside environment. In fact, these sequences are a little spooky. The combat sections are equally engaging, especially the ones that occur when Sam is bleeding out, as it adds a layer of tension to the proceedings.

3Moonlighting

Well-designed video game heistsare always fun, and that’s what you get in Moonlighting. The boss doesn’t know about the job, so you and Paulie attempt to rob the Grand Imperial Bank alone.

Because of the time period, you don’t get a bunch of fancy gizmos to help. In fact, there isn’t even much planning. The two of you simply don face coverings and charge into the bank wielding weapons. Once inside, you need to threaten the manager, kill the guards, and fight your way out. The whole thing is an enjoyable thrill ride.

2Visiting Rich People

The game’s best stealth mission is called Visiting Rich People. In it, you need to acquire and get rid of evidence that incriminates the gang. Unfortunately, it’s hidden away in a prosecutor’s huge mansion. So, you must sneak into the place and grab it.

All the guards around the mansion seem to have incredible awareness of their surroundings, which makes this a challenging mission. But the challenge makes the stealth all the more exhilarating. And the chaotic escape from the mansion is also very thrilling.

1The Saint And The Sinner

In The Saint And The Sinner, you do two jobs in quick succession. For the first one, you get vengeance on a hotel manager by planting a bomb in his establishment, and you pay off a prostitute along the way. The second job has you attending a funeral that turns violent.

It’s brilliant how the first job seamlessly transitions into the second one. A thrilling rooftop chase leads you to the church where the funeral is taking place. The shenanigans on the rooftops and the battle inside the church are two of the most well-designed combat encounters in the game. And the infiltration sequence in the hotel is a fun moment, too.
