One of the issues with the Xbox One on launch was that it lacked games, as the system didn’t allow backward compatibility back then. Therefore, you could only play games made specifically for the console. TheXbox Series X|Sis better in that regard, as you can play any Xbox One title on the system.

As a result, the console began its lifespan with a pretty impressive catalog of games. And since then, the selection has continually been bolstered. Now, you have fantastic options regardless of what you like to play. For example, if you’re fond of turn-based RPGs, the following titles will keep you busy.
7Yakuza: Like A Dragon
The Yakuza series hasn’t always been known for turn-based RPG combat, as most of the games are action-adventure, beat ‘em ups. As such,Like A Dragonpresents a significant change for the long-running series.
Yet, the turn-based fights still feel very Yakuza-like. This is because, despite fighters taking turns, the battles are still fast-paced and you can still use silly weaponry. Things are also different regarding the story, as the traditional series protagonist Kiryu is no longer around. Instead, a man named Ichiban teams up with a few allies and attempts to get payback for his wrongful imprisonment.
6Undertale
Undertale is famous for being a very original game and not following usual gaming conventions. This is the case for pretty much every aspect of the title, including its turn-based combat. There are generally no parties or teams. So, battles are usually one-on-one.

During the enemy attacks, it turns into a bullet hell-like game, as you need to control a little heart and avoid everything coming your way. Then on offense, you need to pass a mini-game to successfully attack. Not that you’ll always want to attack, as you’re free togo on a pacifist runand avoid killing any of the creatures you face.
5Wasteland 3
The Wasteland series has provided some ofthe best isometric RPGsin recent history. In Wasteland 3, your party ventures to a post-apocalyptic Colorado that’s covered in ice. While there, you get into an abundance of turn-based battles.
These fights are different from what you see in a typical turn-based RPG. This is because you don’t have magical powers or witchcraft at your disposal. You’re armed with more traditional weaponry, such as guns - things in the environment can also help you deal some damage. Plus, you need to keep yourself safe using various bits of cover you find.
4Marvel Midnight Suns
BeforeMarvel Midnight Suns’release, it was unclear if Firaxis Games’ signature brand of turn-based combat could work in a superhero setting. It certainly does, as MMS is an exceptional RPG about a new hero teaming up with Marvel comic-book characters to stop their powerful mother, Lilith.
When it comes to combat, the game shares some resemblance to the XCOM games. However, the developers altered the formula to make it more superhero friendly. For example, you’re usually heavily outnumbered by your opponents, which works because your superheroes are capable of taking several enemies out quickly. On top of that, there is a card-playing mechanic, which serves as your way of unleashingattacks and skills. It makes the game more strategic than the average comic-book title.
3South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Over the years, there have been a bunch of games based on television shows and movies. Most aren’t great, but Ubisoft’s recent South Park RPGs have broken the mold. The Fractured But Whole, in particular, is a surprisingly well-polished game.

Naturally, as the title is based on South Park, it’s filled with the sort of crude and controversial humor that made the TV series famous. Yet, somehow, the game manages to balance comedy with well-thought-out turn-based combat. As such, many of your abilities are ridiculous, especially as they’re based on various South Park characters' made-up superpowers. But they’re powerful and fun to use.
2Divinity: Original Sin 2
What you don’t usually get with turn-based RPGs is the inclusion of co-op play. However,Divinity: Original Sin 2allows friends to join you on your adventure both locally and online. The adventure in question is a very fantasy-fuelled one about dark creatures invading the bright world of Rivellon. You need to stop these rogues, mostly through choices and turn-based battles.
These fights typically revolve around using elements, the environment, and your specific set of powers to gain victory. If you have a co-op partner, you will each control different party members, which adds an extra element to proceedings as strategy and teamwork are vital against tougher enemies.
1Persona 5 Royal
In the world of this popular JRPG, there is a supernatural realm that the protagonist team, known as the Phantom Thieves, can enter. Once inside, they can roam around palaces created by the subconscious desires of human beings. From there, they can effectively steal people’s evil intentions. They do this to the morally questionable adults they meet to change their ways. While roaming these palaces, you get into fights with physical manifestations of different psyches.
It sounds complex, but it makes sense when you play the game. And the combat is easy to understand, as at its core, the game contains traditional turn-based gameplay. You control each of your party members in order and unleash attacks on your enemies, trying to expose their weaknesses. On top of that, there are a few other elements to combat that make the game feel unique.
