Sometimes, getting from point A to point B is much more complicated than it has to be. This can be for many reasons — terrifying creatures obstructing your path, your lack of a specific item required to advance, and numerous variations in between. On the other hand, sometimes, it can be as basic as the bridge being out.

Bridges take you where you need to go, though sometimes they require much more extra work than we’re used to. We’re used to the concept of toll bridges, but games tend to up that ante significantly. Either because you have to build the bridge yourself if you want to use it or because the bridge poses a particular challenge you have to overcome.

7Golden Gate Bridge (Watch Dogs 2)

Yes, this bridge exists in real life, so it might not be fair to stack it against some of the more fantastical bridges of video games. Yet, there’s something deeply satisfying about hacking a motorbike inWatch Dogs 2and then cruising from one side of the bridge to the other while desperately trying to obey all traffic laws. But, hey, we’re hackers, not reckless drivers.

While some of us will likely never see the Golden Gate Bridge ourselves, Marcus lets us live out our travel-hungry dreams. Sometimes, you just want to play a game where things feel normal. Take a leisurely drive, and enjoy the sights.

6Your First Bridge! (Animal Crossing: New Horizons)

What better bridge could there be than the one you built yourself? InAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, the moment you can make a bridge is (literally) a game changer. While you could use your trusty stick to cross the rivers, you just knew there was a ton of space just waiting to be meticulously designed.

So, when you’re given the ability to make a bridge of any design you want and some choice of color, there is nothing that can compare to that joy. Finally, you won’t have to cluster all the houses together — you can spread out and give Avery some space to stretch his wings. The world is yours for the taking. So build a beautiful park and call it a day.

5Whalebone Bridge (Skyrim)

You find this particular crossing in Sovngarde in the frosty lands ofSkyrim. As far as bridges go, it’s one of the most striking. It’s built from the skeleton of a great beast (apparently a very, very big whale) and leads to the Hall of Valor. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as you’d hope to cross — you must defeat Tsun, the guard of the whalebone bridge, in combat.

It’s just a test to prove your worth, but it shouldn’t be so difficult to cross a bridge, you know? And fighting on bridges is incredibly nerve-wracking, with the whole “falling to your death” aspect to consider. Still, the whalebone bridge, as it stands, is so interesting as a piece of the world. Also, it just looks cool.

4Kaldwin’s Bridge (Dishonored)

A focal point in the run-down city of Dunwall,Dishonored’s Kaldwin Bridge is both a beautiful sight and an absolute monster. Not because there’s anything wrong with the bridge itself, mind you — it’s architecturally striking — but because it creates a bottleneck for you as you try to manoeuvre your way to your target.

While he’s supernaturally empowered, Corvo is still a man and as weak to flesh-obliterating electricity as anyone else. You must be smart about crossing Kaldwin’s Bridge — it’s full of guards and deadly technology. A tough centerpiece for a mission, but unforgettable one. Besides, you can’t beat the view of the sunset from the top of the bridge, should you choose to climb it. Give yourself a moment to breathe and look out on a Dunwall that seems almost peaceful.

3Great Eldin Bridge (The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess)

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princesshas its ups and downs, like any game. Luckily, the duel against King Bulblin, the leader of the Bulblins, atop Great Eldin Bridge is one of the highest highs of the entire game. You are in hot pursuit of King Bulblin after he kidnapped Colin from his temporary residence in Kakariko Village. Finally, after some horseback combat against Bulblin soliders in theabsolutely massive Hyrule Field, you face the king alone.

On Eldin Bridge, as the sun sets and the wall of pulsing, growing twilight illuminates the horizon, the two of you play a game of chicken. You must slash King Bulblin three times to win — but everything feels possible on Epona, doesn’t it? So send that king howling into the chasm below as you take a moment to revel in your victory.

2Broken Bridge (Journey)

Journeyis a captivating game. With no dialogue, text, or straightforward storytelling, it manages to weave a beautiful and compelling tale of perseverance and, in most cases, friendship. If you’ve played it, you know how achingly beautiful it can be, both interms of visualsand story, and how easily you fall into a comfortable partnership with whatever player you are paired with.

The Broken Bridge section of Journey is fairly early on, a level that teaches you how to use your cloth abilities. You must find a way to cross this massive, crumbling — yet stunning — bridge to advance. It’s simple and elegant — just like Journey itself.

1The Sky Bridge (The Last Of Us: Part 2)

We’re with Abby on this one - we absolutely would not want to cross this monstrosity in the sky, either. InThe Last of Us: Part 2, Abby needs to get from one part of Seattle to another as quickly as possible without being hindered by Infected or human interference. The journey usually takes days. Days you don’t have, not anymore. So, when Lev suggests the Sky Bridge, it seems like the best option. Until you get up there.

Held together with scaffolding, built from skyscraper to skyscraper with old building equipment, the Sky Bridge is absolutely terrifying. Abby, who istougher than damn near anyone we’ve met, becomes consumed by her fear. Clickers? Who cares. Bloaters? We could take ‘em. But a wobbly bridge that feels like one stiff breeze from collapsing? Yeah, no thanks. That said, it is one of the coolest locations in The Last of Us: Part 2 — a look into how civilizations evolved in the wake of the Cordyceps infection.
