Walls are some of the most fundamental defensive structures humans can put up. For thousands of years, walls around cities were paramount for thriving as a society, while walled castles were important to lords holding power over their lands. Video games have come up with some very creative and imposing works of architecture, and walls are no exception.

There is also a built-in gameplay feature of walls since they can keep you from entering certain areas on the map, or provide a challenge for you to get over the wall. As games become more expansive and graphically impressive, there have been some monumental walls sprung up as well.

10Combine Walls (Half-Life 2)

The Combine is a particularly oppressive empire inHalf-Life 2, one which created the Combine Mobile Wall. This behemoth has a drive system that can slowly move metal blocks outward.

These barriers are found around the Citadel in City 17. Not only are these things imposing, but they can crush people when moving. The Combine Mobile Wall only continues to lend to the hellish nature of Half-Life 2’s conquered Earth.

9The Black Gate (Shadow Of Mordor)

The fortified entrance to Mordor is an imposing one.Shadow of Mordorand Shadow of War are visually impressive games that bring the grittier parts ofLord of the Ringsto life. The Black Gate — a 60-foot high, 250-foot long black stone wall — is no exception.

Built by Sauron’s forces to protect Mordor from invasion, it doesn’t exactly lay out the welcome mat for anyone. It’s also a wall that would be extremely hard to get over.

8Cosmodrome (Destiny)

One of the first visuals you see inDestinyandDestiny 2is the ruins of the wall surrounding the Cosmodrome. This area was a launch site from the Golden Age of Humanity, and when the Darkness attacked, people fled to the area to escape on shuttles.

The Cosmodrome wall stretches into the horizon as shuttles still sit in their launch platforms. The first level even has you move through the expansive insides of the Cosmodrome wall, which is unsettlingly vast and bathed in darkness.

7Stormwind (World Of Warcraft)

Stormwind is the largest human city in Azeroth, and you feel that walking through its walls. The entrance, through the walls, takes forever in-game to walk through as you admire the towering architecture. InWorld of Warcraftlore, these walls were rebuilt after the second Human-Orc war, brick by brick.

This city is one of the most iconic locations in the game since many players start as humans. Close to the starting area, the largely underpopulated Elwynn Forest, it’s hard to forget coming across Stormwind’s walls for the first time.

6Great Plateau Wall (The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild)

While most walls keep you out, the Great Plateau Wall inThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildkeeps you in the “tutorial level” — even though it’s one of the most expansive and free-flowing tutorial areas in gaming. You can pick up all the basic gameplay aspects on the plateau before you ever venture off to other areas.

The kicker is that the wall around the plateau is so high that falling from it will kill early-game Link. Getting the paraglider allows you to overcome this wall, which is a combination of cliffs and Hyrule ruins. We’re not breaking new ground here, but it’s these details that make Breath of the Wild feel so unique, creative, andfun to replay.

Mad Max was a criminally underrated game when it was launched. The visuals were as vibrant as you could make a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Gas Town, the major city in this open world, is no exception, and its towers of burning fuel complement its walls in a very intimidating nature.

Would you attempt to raid Gas Town if the photo above is what greets you? Nope. The walls, surrounded by an oil sludge moat, have to be crossed via a bridge. Forget any medieval castle you have ever seen: Gas Town appears to be the ultimate fortress.

4Walls Around The Last City (Destiny)

The walls around the Last Human City in Destiny are so well built, you would think they’re protecting what remains of humankind or something. The city was constructed under the powerful Traveler, and around the city is “The Wall.”

Keeping out the Darkness — which is no easy task — this structure is massive. Titans built The Wall, which has since proven to be a formidable structure against enemy attackers. There have been many battles over these walls and even occupation by the Red Legion. But do you know what? In the end, Guardians always seem to come out on top over the Darkness.

3Megaton (Fallout 3)

Megaton’s walls inFallout 3have been so successful they have been able to keep out the dangers of the Capital Wasteland, and a vibrant community within. Surethe town is doomedbecause they thought it would be a grand idea to build a city around a bomb, but that isn’t the wall’s fault.

Megaton has an impressive gate-structure entrance with a jet engine. The walls are scavenged airplanes, giving them a unique look. It’s a testament to the walls that everyone feels so safe next to a live atomic bomb.

2Villedor Walls (Dying Light)

Another last inhabited city on Earth, the walls around Villedor inDying Light 2were constructed by the GRE. Despite the world falling apart because of a viral outbreak of — let’s say it — zombies, Villedor still manages to support thousands of residents.

People can keep the infected at bay, even though they roam the city at night. Sure factors are playing against the inhabitants, but the city is in much better shape than what lies outside these walls.

1The Strip (Fallout: New Vegas)

In the middle of the post-apocalypse, Vegas still shines brightly. The walls erected around the Strip keep it a safe place.Fallout: New Vegasproposes that “even in the event of a nuclear war, what if people still want to go to Vegas?”

Naturally, in a time when the Mojave Desert has plenty of raiders and baddies, New Vegas required walls to keep order and security. Because of them, Vegas' is a vacation spot in a sea of despair.
