Persona 3 Portable’sage shows through some of its dated dialogue, but there are words that are simply too relatable and memorable for us to forget from this game. Your opinions of each character must vary, even among those who are supposed to be allies, but that’s part of thePersonaseries experience. Characters are treated as complicated and evolving beings, and you can’t always put them in a clearly labeled box between good and evil.

The complexity of the characters in Persona 3 Portable gives us a view of how each character views the world, which we can nostalgically look back at through these quotes. If you haven’t played this game yet, these lines might convince you that it’s not too late to pick it up.

10The Grind Brings Gradual Change

“Change Cannot Occur Without Sustained Effort And An Unprecedented Level Of Commitment.”

Mitsuru knows her way with words, so much so that even the school principal delivered a speech similar to hers at the next school assembly.

you’re able to’t expect less from the daughter of the Kirijo group, but this remark of hers is a great reminder that the grind does reap rewards. Focusing on your goals and working smartly towards them increases your chances of achieving the things you want to, whether it’s mastering a certain game mechanic or getting that academic or work achievement.

9Order Is Important

“Without Rules, The Whole System Will Collapse. They’re Mistaking Selfishness For Freedom.”

Hidetoshi might not be your most liked character since he does come off as stiff and rule-oriented, but there is some truth behind his words. He just wants the school to be orderly, which is why he signed up for the school council. This also explains why he aspires toward an educated and well-informed society, as it is revealed that he wants to be a teacher in the future.

Although the world isn’t ideal for everyone, rules seem to have benefits in making an amount of people satisfied in society.

8People’s Beliefs Are Rooted In Perception

“People Hear What They Choose To Hear, And Believe What They Want To Believe.”

As twisted as Takaya is, he isn’t wrong when he says that people’s beliefs are based on what they want to see. There are many instances where various characters in the game take people as they are based on their preconceived notions of the world. The main character and their allies are not exempt from this quote. Yukari believes that her mother is weak-willed because of how she copes with her problems, and Junpei had discriminatory beliefs rooted in women at the start of the game.

These perceptions change because they’ve chosen to adopt different beliefs based on their experiences with the main character as the game progressed.

7You Only Live Once

“Don’t Let The Past Control You, And Don’t Look To The Future; Simply Live In The Moment.”

In short, you only live once and there is very little point in being riddled with fear of the future. It’s also not productive to be bound to your past, especially if there are a lot of bad experiences laced in it. Although consequences matter, and the past shapes who you currently are, Takaya is simply reminding us that it’s pointless to think about things we can’t change. Forgetting to live in the present also makes it difficult to move toward the future, since you haven’t laid foundations for it.

So don’t sweat either if you can afford not to, but take it with a grain of salt since these words are coming from a man who has very little to lose.

6Being On The Side Of Justice Can Face Opposition

“Those Who Carry Out Justice Have Always Clashed With Others. History Has Proven This To Be True.”

Hidetoshi is a sentinel in upholding order, but he does make a remark that is applicable to those who pursue justice. It’s only natural for those who seek to do what’s right to face opposition, especially when that way of achieving justice is unconventional.

But Hidetoshi in the game is a small reminder that we should stand for it, even if it means being scrutinized by the majority for doing so.

5Time Flies When You’re Having A Good Time

“The Flow Of Time Is Fixed At A Certain Speed, And Yet It Seems There Are Moments When It Passes So Quickly.”

Maybe you’re looking at this from a sentimental standpoint, and remember moments in your life when time passed by so quickly because you spent it with the people you are fond of. But you may also look at this quote and feel horrified at the number of hours you’ve spent in one game as Steam would report to you. Either way, spending time with Theo reminds us that no matter how precious time is, it flies by quickly when you’re having fun.

It also passes quickly when you’re with somebody you like spending your time with. Why not spend time with the people you love by playing more games with them so that you can hit two birds with one stone?

4Friendship Can’t Be Taken At Face Value

“True Friendship Is Seen Through The Heart, Kid, Not The Eyes.”

Mutatsu is a jaded old man when we first meet him, and some of his dialogue with us can be creepy. But these are words of a man who’s lived and seen a lot of things transpire in life.

Although he does confess to being alone, which is why he became a monk, he does give valuable input about friendships. Relationships can’t always be measured at face value, and they often become tested over time. Those who are true friends will prove themselves to you through their actions, not just through labels and words.

3Life Must Have Meaning

“Man Cannot Face Death Without First Finding Meaning In Life.”

You might think that this is rich coming from somebody who doesn’t mind causing terror around town. His case isn’t helped either when he thinks that humanity is lost, and that salvation can only be brought about from Nyx, but it’s true that a meaningless life can make a person feel aimless. We see this through different characters in the game, who feel lost about what they want to do in life and are undecided about their convictions.

Regardless of what the meaning of life is to Takaya, each character in the game made meaning out of the rest of their high school years the way they wanted to.

2Great Power Comes With Great Responsibility

“In Exchange For Power, You Can No Longer Look Away From The Things You Don’t Want To See.”

In this scene, Yukari found out the truth about her father’s death. But in light of this, she also realizes that she has to do something about this information and that she can use her powers to do what is right.

We might not be able to shoot ourselves with a revolver like Persona 3 characters can and activate psychic powers, but we all have individual capabilities which we can use to make our world a better place. This is especially true when you have more power to make a bigger impact, but having less doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything either.

1Being A Leader Knows No Gender

“Whether One Is A Man Or Woman Doesn’t Factor Into It. The Responsibility Falls To Those Who Have The Gift.”

Mitsuru proves to us once again that she’s a boss with words, and it’s great to hear her defend the main character from Junpei’s inferiority from the fact that a girl is leading the team. It’s nice to see this happen, since Junpei often feels insecure about the female main character for their abilities on multiple occasions. This changes later on in the game depending on how strong your social link becomes with him, but somebody had to call him out for his sexism.

Despite being more than a decade old, Persona 3 Portable didn’t fail in portraying powerful female characters who can stand up for other women as well.
