Though TheGamer staff will play many games from many different genres and many different eras this weekend, the common denominator among most of them is blasting aliens. There’s the newish sci-fi shooters, likeReturnal, the 2021 PS5 exclusive that just landed on PC this week. The oldish sci-fi shooters, likeWarframe, which is going strong after nearly a decade. And the new/old sci-fi shooters like theDead Space remake,Metroid Prime Remastered, andMass Effect Legendary Edition. Together, these blasts from the past and present form quite the constellation of carnage.
Elsewhere, card games — digital and physical — are consuming TheGamer’s collective time.Marvel SnapandMagic: The Gatheringwill collect all your spare moments if you aren’t careful. Believe us, we know.

I’m still plugging away at the same games I’ve been playing for the past few weekends, so Mass Effect 2, Dead Space, andHi-Fi Rushare all on the docket. But, I also pickedTriangle Strategyback up and only have, like, five hours left. So, maybe this weekend I’ll finish that up and put some time into a game that I can’t talk about yet that I’m reviewing.

I only ever seem to have something to play when it’s Magic: The Gathering. I do play other games, honest, but I’m off to Birmingham again this weekend to attend The Gathering. It’s the first time I’ve gone to an MTG event since retiring my ol’ faithful Commander deck Kwain, but I’ve got a new Kibo, Uktabi Prince deck to help fill the void and give my opponents lots and lots of bananas.

I’m doing a lot of traveling this weekend, so I’ve bought the Metroid Prime remaster to accompany me in the car. I’ve only playedDreadand a little bit of the originalMetroidviaNintendo Switch Online, so I’m excited to get stuck into some 3D action. I’m already a big fan of the map (maybe a weird thing to point out, but it’s really great) and the spacey pew-pew action. I’m saving everything after the opening level for the journey, but I’m already excited to play more.

I know, I know, I’m about a year late to the party, but for most of this weekend, I’m going to be playing Returnal. I never actually got around to this one after it was released for PS5 and so I plan to make up for this little oversight by picking the game up on PC. I’ve heard great things about Returnal and by the way, I’m a big fan of atmospheric adventure games and roguelikes, meaning that I’m really looking forward to this weekend, because I can finally see what all of the fuss was about. In any case, I’ll see you somewhere out there in space.

to get a coworker of mine to playPowerWash Simulator, I’ve agreed to try out a game that he likes. That means this weekend, for the first time ever, I’ll be dipping my toes into Warframe. I have no clue what to expect. All I know is the game is free and it has…frames. Also, my coworker has low-key warned me that starting as a beginner will be rough. I’m clearly in for a good time. Sarcasm aside, I’m pretty excited to give it a try. I like the feeling of starting a new game, and after non-stop PowerWashing and Dead-Spacing for the past month, it’ll be nifty to attempt some Warframing.
I’m away in Canada for super cool gamer things, and thus my gaming time is limited to Marvel Snap and whatever I have installed on my Nintendo Switch. I’ve now made some serious progress in Metroid Prime Remastered and have fallen victim toBreath of the WIldas I reinstall it to hopefully bottle up the hype I have for the sequel.
