One somewhat overlooked option is that of the Firbolg. They’re quite complex and varied characters that you can really find an attachment to once they’re given a try. Firbolgs are nature-inspired characters that have some pretty interesting natural abilities, and whether you want to use them to optimize your next character build or work against them, there may be some things about Firbolgs you may not have realized.
7Cousins Of Giants
Ranging in at six to seven feet tall, one could definitely make sense of their lineage. Yes indeed, Firbolgs are distantly related to the giants you may find out in the world. Thankfully, they’re often far kinder than their larger family.
Not only does their kinship alter their stature, but they’re also gifted in understanding, as well as speaking, giant thanks to their relationship to said creatures. Both these traits are a great boon that could add a bit of variety to your adventuring party.
6One With Nature
Not only do Firbolgs have a kinship to giants, but they have also been touched by the fey. In fact, they can often be found inthe lush forestsof the Feywild as well as the mortal realms.

Due to their connection with nature, they have the ability to speak with plants and animals in a limited capacity as well as an intrinsic understanding of magic. Knowing this, they are often found in the deepest forests, tending the land and protecting it from anyone who wishes to disturb it.
5Ferocious and Kind
They are a usually generous and peaceful people, often going above and beyond to protect the places they call home and the ones they call friends. Don’t let that fool you though, they are more than capable fighters and spell casters.
Their larger stature makes them capable hand-to-hand experts who can wield most heavy weapons with ease. Theirinnate spell castingand attachment to the fey also makes them great for a druid or ranger build. Their homes reflect that, often blending in well withnature around them, but having ample fortifications to dissuade those who would wish to do them harm.
4A Lawful Society
Most Firbolgs are Lawful Good in nature, following a code that has been passed down for generations. This code is often carried on hand by most Firbolgs. They take interactions with others, other races especially, quite seriously. Often, they are straight shooters in conversation, and take lying harshly.
Much of their viewson societal standingalso go back to how they view nature. They often want to leave things as they were found, if not better off. For example, they farm only as much as they need to, and even in times of famine, they would starve rather than put strain on the surrounding landscape.
3Reclusive Nature
Firbolgs can be hard to find. As said before, they often prefer to be out in nature and away from other civilizations. If you do end up findinga Firbolg township, count yourself very lucky, but also watch how your party interacts with them.
Any slight against nature can be taken as a slight against them. Although they may not be quick to act out in violence, they may take action if they feel like their way of life or home is threatened. Exile and lack of trade are more predominant as punishments in their society for outsides and clan alike. They can be a great help forfighting off monstersthat threaten nature around them, though.
2Not All That Glitters
Firbolg society doesn’t put much standing on that of wealth. In fact, much of their economy is trade or acts of service based. Knowing that, gold or other forms of currency may not have the weight you may think if you are allowed to trade with Firbolgs.

However, trade with them is scarce, unless they see you as an ally or think you have something worth their while. Proving you are aligned with nature too, or can solve some of their problems, are often the best ways to prove your worth in their society if you want to induce trade with them. Who knows, they may have somepretty interesting items.
1Varying Religions
Other gods of the giant pantheon, or especially other gods of nature, can also be focuses of their devotion. Whomever they align their service to, be prepared for them to approach the subject with kindness at first, but be more than able to back their words up with action if you find yourself opposing their deity.
