Enter Jesse Rentier, a take-no-prisoners rough-and-tumble type who is fixated on pounding every last vampire he sees into a bloody pulp. Jesse is the son of the man who founded the Rentier Institute, America’s last line of defense against the creatures of the night. A lot happens during Jesse’s journey to uncover a wicked vampire plot, but by the time the credits roll, we’re left with a few questions concerningEvil West’s loreand future.
8Who Are The Sanguisuge Leaders?
Perhaps one of the most persistent mysteries that will be gnawing at players from the start of the game is the question of who (or what) leads the Sanguisuge (vampire breed). When Jesse finds Peter D’Abano, a rogue vampire conversing with shadowy specters that represent the vampire leadership, it’s easy to think that they’d enter the picture somewhere in the game’s narrative. But you’d be mistaken.
The leadership first condemns Peter D’Abano for attempting to start a war with humanity and sentences the vampire to a true death. Of course, Jesse delivers that sentencing unbeknownst to the mysterious council. Now, with D’Abano and his daughter Felicity dead, perhaps the leadership will find their corpses to be proof of humankind’s aggression. If that’s the case, we’ll see more from them in a possible sequel.
7Where Did That Big Monstrous Corpse Come From?
Evil West boasts a large catalog of vampiric enemies for players to take on. Much of this variety is thanks to Felicity’s experimentation with infecting long-dead beasts with vampirism. At one point in the game, Jesse finds himself up to his knees in leeches, deep within a darkened forest. These leeches, of course, are being used to administer the vampire infection.
As Jesse strolls down the path, he encounters a massive dragon-like corpse. He mentions that it’s another “ancient beast.” He even notes that despite some rotting, the creature appears to be recently deceased. This ominous gargantuan monster might intimidate most of us into thinking we’ll have to tangle with one down the road, but that’s not the case. This creature, far larger than any dinosaur, begs the question: what is it and where did it come from?
6Does Vampirism Also Turn The Infected Evil?
Jesse’s father, William, began the Rentier Institute as the premier defense against the supernatural. As an organization of vampire killers, one could even say that William “wrote the book” so to speak. When Felicity assaults the Rentier Institute, she infects William with vampirism in order to establish a telepathic link and learn his secrets. Jesse and the remaining team attempt to stave off his transformation, but to no avail.

Toward the end of the game, Jesse tracks down William and confronts him. During this time, William communicates with Jesse telepathically, explaining that he was wrong and that they should embrace the power that vampirism offers them. Essentially, he turns on everything he ever stood for. Does that mean that becoming a vampire automatically transforms one’s soul as well, making one inherently evil?
5Is Chester Morgan Officially A Vampire Defector?
In the beginning, Chester is a hapless vampire who feels the full force of Jesse’s aggression while being interrogated on the whereabouts of Peter D’Abano. Surprisingly, Jesse and Edgar don’t kill Chester. They apparently even let him escape to see another day (or night, rather).
Later in the game, Edgar and Jesse track down Chester again to learn more intel on Felicity’s plans. Immediately, Edgar runs a knife through the vampire’s hand. Wincing in pain, Chester tells them that he was waiting for them and planned to tell them everything. He even got them some wine. This second time around, Chester seems far more accepting of his role as an informant. It’s likely that Jesse will run into him again should a sequel materialize. Perhaps, he is a vampire defector.
4Do All Vampires Have Multiple Forms Like Felicity?
In the final showdown with Felicity, she transforms into her “true” form. Her frightful new image is the very beast that Jesse must take down as thegame’s final boss. Earlier, we witnessed Peter D’Abano also transform.
However, the game is littered with vampire enemies who just are what they are. They never transform into anything more grotesque or formidable. This begs the question: do all vampires have the capability of transformation? Could Chester, perhaps, turn into some winged bat-like creature?
3Were The Vampires Telling The Truth About Jesse’s Nature?
As a gunslinger and brawler, Jesse is well-versed in combat. He wields the gauntlet his father’s institute crafted with brutal force. He’s also shown that he is unrelenting and persistent in his quest to destroy vampires.

Before Jesse finds Felicity, he speaks with Peter D’Abano’s severed head. Peter tells Jesse that due to their link with his father, William, they’ve seen Jesse how Willliam sees him, a wild and violent beast in his own right. Peter claims that Jesse can’t bend to authority, and he will always act on his unchecked rage and aggression. Is this merely Peter taunting Jesse with lies? Or is there some truth to what Peter is saying?
2Who Will Replace Harrow As Secretary Of War?
If you played through the entirety of Evil West, it’s likely that the Secretary of War, James Harrow, was your least favorite character. In fact, he is a loathsome piece of work who dogs Jesse and his cohorts at every turn for their choices. Harrow proves to be dangerous simply because of his haughty arrogance.
In the final cut scene of the game, President Grover Cleveland relieves Harrow of his duties and offers the job to Jesse. He declines, since he’s not the type to sit behind a desk. But indubitably, the President will select another Secretary of War who will help oversee the restoration of the Rentier Institute. It’s likely that a new character will fill the role. But it remains to be seen whether the new Secretary of War will be a welcome change for the Rentier Institute or another thorn in its side.
1Just How Big Will The Rentier Institute Become?
Perhaps, the most exciting question for fans of the game is the prospect of the Rentier Institute’s future. In the final moments before the credits hit the screen, Jesse emphasizes just how much bigger and better the Rentier Institute has to be. The President even promises his help in getting Jesse whatever he needs to turn the organization into the vampire-crushing weapon it needs to be.
For those who eagerly anticipate a sequel, it’s exciting to wonder what will become of the Rentier Institute in the future and how that will affect the story and gameplay. Obviously, the Institute is responsible for Jesse’s most effective weapons. A bolder take on the organization could bring promisingnew weapon developmentsalong with it.
