The highlights of this level are a large area, apocalyptic scenes of a burning field of Oil, and another new enemy type. It’s a fairly straightforward level, but the brawl at the end can be quite the run-stopper for the unprepared as it’s a minor difficulty spike. To help you soar through this mission and into the next chapter with ease, here’s a helpful walkthrough to Chapter Nine: Where Oil Tastes Like Blood in Evil West.
Boss fight
Find The Survivors
The Gaster
Upon returning toCalicowith the ingredients for the cure and anEdgarthat’s looking a bit worse for wear, it seemsJames Harrow, the financial funder and hitherto head of the defense against theVampiremenace for theUnited Stateshas a request forJessie. Starting out from theSaloon, head into theKitchensat the back. There’s aglowing boxwithBucks, the first of many for this chapter. Go down through the hiddenBarrel Doorand wander over toVergil’s Laboratory. There’sBuckson a table by thePerk Resetmachine and across from the man himself by the doors are moreBuckson a barrel. Another pile ofcollectible cashto take home.
From there, go intoEmilia’s Laboratory, there’s theGrant of Landcollectible lore note on the table in the middle of the room. Go down into theHolding Cellsto giveWilliam Rentierthe supposed cure and to hear a lead on whereFelicityand herVampirearmy may be hiding, turns out it’s inDickerson. But for now you’ll need to head toHarrowas he has a request for Jessie. After that cutscene plays out the mission will start properly and you’ll be transported to theOil Fields.
The place is owned by a number of mysterious companies, which it turns out are obviously owned by theVampiresand are operated as fronts for whatever twisted business they have in mind. Run down the incline, speak to the worker and then use theZiplineto get into theOil Fields. Once you hit the ground, turn right and head towards theTNT, shooting it will revealBucks. Retrace your steps and go left then down the next two drops, on the right of this area is aglowing boxwithBucksinside, it’s by a telegraph pole but you can’t miss it.
Swing across the gap and in front of you on a box are some moreBucks. Go around the path and on your left will be the first of twocollectible lorenotes titledHarrow’s Secretary Report. Follow the path around and you’ll see a collapsed bridge,do not jump over it.
This is one of the game’s many infamous backstep blockers. Crossing points that will prevent you from going back to grab things you might’ve missed.
Shoot theTNTon the left and drop down, head right towards underneath the bridge and there will be a hidden chest with theGhost SkinforJessie’s Boomstickand a bunch of cash for your efforts. Retrace your steps back up and go over the bridge. It’s time for an ambush and it’ll beBoo-Hagsthat you’ll have to deal with. There’s a large pack of them, but there’s plenty ofTNTaround to detonate them with. To make things more interesting there’s a big web-throwingStalker, probably fished out from theSwampsof the last chapter.
There’s a lot ofBoo-Hagsthat’ll get thrown at you during this fight, and it’s a prime example of why theStalkeris such a threat when it appears with some friends. Mulch through the minions first though as they’re a great source ofEnergythat can be used in anOverchargeattack on theStalker. If you survived this fight, look at the tower in the same area and there’ll be a gap to crawl under and a glowing box withBucksinside. Leave this area, run down the slope, and pick up theBuckson the pile of junk next to the Oil.
Hop over the gap and turn right, there areBuckson a barrel. Hop over the gap, run forward, and collect more cash from the barrel in front of you whilstJessietalks to some nearby workers. Hop over the barricade once the dialogue finishes to fight aHive Croneas a normal enemy type along with someBoo-Hags. Take theCroneout first as it’ll just make everyone else stronger and harder to deal with, then deal with the small-fry that’s been left without support as quite a lot of them will keep spawning for a while.
Use theX-BowandCrippling Rodto deal with theHive CroneQuickly. TheRentier Rifleis far too slow.
As you leave this area there’ll be a glowing box withBuckson your right. Talk to the worker then retrace your steps to find the next path of progress, it’s through a barricade. Smash it and run up the walkway to the office, break the front of it to free the workers and get access to a bag ofBucks. There’s also aglowing boxwith more cash inside on a raised platform next to the same building.
To progress, you’re going to need to break two counterweights on the sluice to drain the oil. The first is right in front of you and to get to the second you’ll need to walk out onto the Sluice itself to get to it. There’s also two bags ofBuckson it that are worth picking up. This section also introduces a new mechanic wherebyJessiecan charge himself up with electricity to power up switches. It only lasts very briefly, so move fast. Once the oil drains, run all the way back to where you came in to be able to start crossing the previously flooded lake.
Run into this new open area and you’ll get ambushed by a pack ofNagals. They’re not too hard to deal with and there’s plenty of space to maneuver around them, so take these mangy mutts out at your leisure. After they’re killed, break open the barricade on the nearby shack, head inside and burn the webbing within. This will let you get to aHidden Chestand a freePerk Pointthat can be spent on unlocking whatever perk you like.
Run back to where you came in and there’ll be an option to drop down. Follow this new path around to find someBucksthen retrace your steps again. Back in the open space, go off to the back left and break the barricade. Hop over the ledge into another arena fights against a very large pack ofNagalsand aStalker. Leave the area, break the barricade and go up the path, there’sBuckson the right by barrels, so don’t forget to collect them. This next section is a bigpower puzzleusing that newEnergycarrying mechanic you just got to play with, now do it again, two more times.
Go towards the main building but head left instead, over a barricade and inside a small shed areBucks. Listen to the gripes of the worker if you haven’t, there’s also a glowing box withBucksnext to him so you’ll need to go next to him anyway. After that, follow the cables to find the switches that you’ll need to power up. There’s ared barnat the back of this area that’s worth breaking into as there are someBucksinside, and there’s a short maze of boxes to go through way at the back of this puzzle area with aglowing boxand moreBuckswaiting at the end.
There is a shortcut you may open up to thecharging machinethat’ll make running to the switches a little easier if you’re having a hard time getting this puzzle down. There’sTNTthat you can shoot that’ll blow apart wreckage.
After the switches are flipped, the path will open into the barn. Go inside and up the stairs, at the end of the walkway are some crying workers and a glowing box withBucks. After this is collected, head to where theBlueprint Tablewas and into the barn behind it. Look up in here as there’s a chain to shoot down and someBucksat the top to collect. There’s also the secondHarrow’s Secretary Reportlore note in here. Grab these and then leave the barn.
Break the barricade and go left, there’s another one to smash and behind it isBucks. There’s aHealthpickup to the left again when you walk back from this area, it’s obscured by boxes. Follow the main path to the right and go up the hill to the next big fight area. This time it’s against aCarrion Husksupported byInfected Proteusjust above you.
Pull the ranged goons down and get rid of them quickly asInfected Vesselswill appear to make things worse whilst theCarrion Huskis stomping around. There’ll be another big wave ofInfected Vessels, followed byJengu Giantsand another group ofInfected Proteussupporting them. Once they’re killed the fight will finish and you can continue on by flipping thePower Switchto activate the elevator.
AsJessierides it up theOil Fieldswill start to burn and explode, it’s quite the spectacle, but you don’t want to hang around and watch it. Run along the burning walkway and brush the right side, you’ll walk into pick-up range of someBucksthat are blending in against the fire. At the end of this path, a cutscene will trigger showingJessieheroically Ziplining to safety to the ground and the next area of this chapter.
TheOil Fieldsare falling to pieces and it’s time to leave. This area is of note because you’ll be constantly attacked by artillery from some unknown position. There’s nothing you’re able to do about it but dodge, so keep an eye on the ground to avoid getting hit as there’ll be a marker showing when a shell is about to land. Keep left when you go in and behind the firstOil Derrickis a bag ofBucks.
There’s a lot of enemies walking around in this area, but you don’t need to deal with them. Just run past them and focus on getting the collectibles. Keep left from the last collectible and you’ll find a building, run through it to grab theBucksinside. The last pile of cash to grab for this chapter is on the far right of this open area. There’s a collapsed tower and a bunch of barrels, along a short trail behind those is achestwith541 Bucks. Finally, there’sburnable bramblesaround this same open area, and behind those is anotherHidden Chestwith a pile of cash and theBursting Boltsupgrade for theX-Bow.
Leave this circular space and head into the next arena area to take on someInfected VesselsandJengu Giants. Follow the path into the trench and run along it as everything collapses, there’sGhoulsalong the way that you’ll need to dispatch to get over the next hurdle. But it’s mostlyInfected Wastersthat you may one-shot with the bow. At the end of this path is another big open area and a new enemy type, theGaster.

Boss Fight: The Gaster
The Gaster is more of aSupport Monsterthan anything. It likes to hang out on buildings or high points in the area and blast you with an energy beam or reduce visibility first then do the big laser whilst sending out burning skulls that track Jessie. Its weak-point flashes when it charges up the non-ranged attack, so shoot it down when it does and it’ll open the creature up to melee attacks. SomeInfected Vessels,Jengu Giants, and aLeecherwill join the brawl, so keep moving and avoid those death rays.
Like theHive Crone, theGasteris a high-priority monster. The beam can hitJessiefrom any angle and it can’t be blocked. So deal with them quickly when the appear with a group.
After the creatures are clearedJessiewill be able to enter the office of theMine Supervisorto see whyHarrowreally sent him there. Turns outHarrowhas been getting a cut of the profits of the mining site andJessieis there to take back the portfolio and mining rights, not theSurvivors. Learning this, he still begrudgingly takes it and leaves theSupervisorto make his own way out of there. But at least he now has some leverage overHarrow. Something that might come up later.
