When an invading army crosses the border into an opposing nation, they tend to struggle with things that the locals have long since adapted to. Factors such as climate and terrain are frequent examples.The Witcher 3introduces another thing to keep track of; monsters. The Nilfgaardians are remarkably bad at dealing with them.

Geralt can be contracted to discover the fate of a missing patrol if he were to visit their camp to the southeast of Velen. Without the manpower or resources to spare for a search, the Quartermaster opens a contract for this patrol, with compensation promised for the man that finds them.

Starting Contract: Patrol Gone Missing

You will have to travelfar, to the southeast of Velento pick up this contract. Posters for it are hung on a notice board inside the camp. Picking one up willstart the quest.Alternatively, you canspeak to the Quartermasterand ask for work. He willprovide this contract.

The Quartermaster explains that a patrol had recently left the camp and has gone missing. He cannot organize a search but can hire some local help to investigate. As a witcher, there is no candidate more suited to the task than Geralt.

Picking Up The Trail

To start the investigation,visit the camp,indicated on the quest marker. Use your Witcher Senses on thecampfire and the footprints leading out of camp.

The closes fast travel point isKimbolt Way.

The footprints will bring youinto a forestwhere Geralt will pick up a foul scent. Following it through the forest will bring you the source,draconid musk.Geralt will surmise thatthe enemy is a draconid.

The woods have no shortage ofwolves and bandits.Be on your guard for them.

Geralt will finda dead bodyhalfway through the trail. Investigating it will change the objective tokilling the monster in question.Continue following the path to find it.

Slaying The Wyvern

The wyvern is a lizard-likeflying monsterthatuses poisonto kill its prey. You will have toavoid its claws and poisonbetween attacks. This isnot a particularly challenging monsterand lacks special movies that some other contract monsters can bring.

The wyvern’s poison might be particularly difficult to deal with. You cancounter its effectsby usingQuento block the hit or by drinkingGolden Orioleto nullify its effects.

Once you have defeated it,loot it for a trophyto complete the contract. At this point, you canreturn to the Quartermasterto complete the contract without a fuss. Alternatively, you caninvestigate the remaining cluesin the area.

Searching For Clues

There is atrail leading past the wyvern’s nest,marked with a body. On investigation, Geralt will deduce thatthe bodies are not Nilfgaardianand have beenconsumed by necrophages,having been there before the patrol.

You can follow this new trail into a cavefilled with more bodies.The blueprint for theEnhanced Griffin Silver Swordis inside, alongside evidence that the Nilfgaardians had executed prisoners.

Geralt’s interaction with the Quartermaster changes if he discovers the bodies. Hewill be furious and arguewith the Nilfgaardian. You can evenrefuse the rewardfor killing the wyvern.

Investigating the bodies willprevent Geralt from asking the Quartermasterabout the missing son in the questBlood Ties.
