But before Sora or even Xehanort made an appearance, there were the Foretellers. These mysterious Keyblade Masters rarely make appearances in the mainline games, so you might’ve been a bit confused seeing them appear at the end of Kingdom Hearts 3.
Before The Keyblade War
The group known as the Foretellers consists of five main members:Aced, Ava, Gula, Invi, and Ira. They first appeared in Kingdom Hearts X as apprentices to the Master of Masters.
Each of their names is derived from theLatin word of each of the seven deadly sinsand they wear masks that resemble the animals of their Unions, which were their personal factions.
Their Keyblades are unique compared to Sora’s or Riku’s and possess distinctiveelemental traits. Luxu isn’t officially included with the Foretellers but he was also an apprentice to the Master of Masters.
Once the Foretellers achieved the title of Keyblade Master, the Master of Masters gifted each of them a copy of theBook of Prophecies, a manual of sorts that details the upcoming Keyblade War. The Master of Masters secretly assigned each of the Foretellers a specific role that they’d play in the upcoming events and created theDream Eater Chirithythat would warn the others if someone became infected by darkness.
After bestowing these items to the Foretellers, the Master of Masters disappeared.
Fighting Darkness
With the Master of Masters gone, the Foretellers dedicated all their time and effort to averting the upcoming Keyblade War. The five of them createdUnions, factions of warriors that would protect worlds from darkness. The worlds that the Foretellers were protecting were progressing in different phases, so some might’ve been further along in development than others. Unfortunately, the Foretellers were unknowingly fulfilling the roles bestowed by the Master of Masters and theKeyblade War was inevitable.
Ira found aNightmare Chirithylingering near the Foretellers’ Chambers, indicating that someone had fallen to darkness. Tension began to grow among the group as they tried to find the traitor. Aced convinces Gula to form an alliance with him, but because alliances were forbidden by the Master of Masters, Invi tries to talk Gula out of the alliance. Aced attacks her, and after learning Gula had theLost Pagefrom the Book of Prophecies, strikes him down as well.
Before the situation got worse, Ira confronted Aced about the situation but the two came to an understanding. Ira found Gula getting his wounds treated by Ava and tried to read the Lost Page. Gula tells Ira that he intends tosummon Kingdom Heartsto lure the Master of Masters back to Daybreak Town. Ava isn’t able to persuade him otherwise and begins gathering Keyblade wielders for the upcoming conflict.
Fulfilling Destiny
Being unable to convince Gula against summoning Kingdom Hearts, Ava acted in accordance with her role and created the Dandelions. These selected Keyblade wielders were ordered toavoid the Keyblade Warand protect new worlds to ensure the safety and future of light. Ava continued following her instructions by appointingfive wielders to succeed the Foretellersbut only one of them would receive a copy of the Book of Prophecies.
But no matter what the Foretellers did, the Keyblade War fast approached. In a final attempt to prevent the coming conflict, Ava triedfinding Luxuin hopes of finding the Master of Masters. However, Ava began to suspect Luxu as the traitor and ultimately attacked him, which was the final straw that signaled the start of the Keyblade War.
The Foretellers lead their Unions into battle in the Badlands and, on the way, encounter you in the game. Your character named Player fights alongside the Foretellers but at some point during the war, theForetellers vanish.
AfterXehanort was defeated in Kingdom Hearts 3, Luxu summoned the Foretellers back into the world in the Keyblade Graveyard. With his Keyblade and the Black Box in his possession, Luxu started telling the Foretellers everything that’s transpired since they left. It’s unclear if we’ve seen the last of the Foretellers, but game director Tetsuya Nomura claimed that it’sunlikely to see them in Kingdom Hearts 4. Time will tell.
