Kyouya Mitsurugi is initially portrayed as a rival to the protagonist, Kazuma Satou. He is a skilled adventurer and a Sword Master from the Kingdom of Belzerg. He wields a cursed sword called “Gram,” and leads a party of adventurers featuring Cremea and Fio.
Kyouya, like Kazuma, originates from Japan and was reincarnated into the fantasy world. Entrusted by the goddess Aqua, he was tasked with defeating the tyrannical Demon King. Aqua granted Mitsurugi the powerful Gram sword specifically for this purpose.
Because of his skills as an adventurer, he quickly gained popularity throughout the fantasy world, even recognized by Iris Stylish-Sword Belzerg, the first princess of the Kingdom of Belzerg.

Mitsurugi first appeared in KonoSuba season 1 episode 5 titled “A Price for This Magic Sword!” in the anime, and volume 2 chapter 8 in the manga titled “May I Get A Restraining Order Against that Arrogant Adventurer!”
He temporarily joins Kazuma’s party and challenges the protagonist to a duel with Aqua’s companionship on the line.

In the third season of the anime, his name is initially brought up in episode 2 by Claire Field Symphonia, Princess Iris’ bodyguard. During a conversation with Kazuma, Claire refers to him as the hero who was defeated by Kazuma in a duel.
