Fantasy doesn’t always have to be serious. In fact, fantasy comedy is an actual genre in the entertainment world, and several video games use this motif to connect with players. One of the reasons thatWorld of Warcrafthas retained its popularity for so long is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

WoW is designed as a living digital world, but it’s tacitly acknowledged that it’s tied to real life, so the many humorous jabs in the game refer to where players live the rest of their lives. Azeroth is filled with in-jokes, puns, self-deprecating humor, and some of the best laughs are hidden in the innocuous and often overlooked item descriptions. Once in a while, a writer with an attitude gets an interesting assignment and decides to have some fun with it - and here are some of the best examples.

8The Five Ring

There are other rings in this set, but they belong on another list, and this is about The 5 Ring. It’s a purple item that’s a world drop which means you may find it almost anywhere. It gives decent bonuses to critical hit and hit rating, and is the BiS item for Feral Druids preparing for raids.

How did this ring get so powerful? According to the description, “This ring appears to have eaten the 3 and 4 rings.”

Most of the coins that can be fished up from the fountain in Dalaran have some kind of meaningful description, and a few of them are funny, but fewer evoke more conflicting emotions than the one for Kel’Thuzad. One of Azeroth’s most fearsome villains, Kel’Thuzad rose through the ranks of the Lich King to become of its most famous guardians, becoming the final boss of Naxxramus, the most notorious raid of the Classic era.

This character murdered, maimed, and turned countless innocents to undead, but did anyone ever reach out to him? The gold coin laments, “Sometimes… I wish someone would come along and just give me a big, long hug.”

6Broken U.L.O.S.E Button

This is the actual name of this item, and it’s a grey-quality bit of junk that has a chance to drop from NPCs and monsters that die in Wintergrasp, one of WoW’s PVP battlegrounds. It has no use other than the joke contained in the description, “It didn’t seem to work either.”

That’s funny on its own, but it’s only half the joke. Back in the day, there was a similar item that dropped in another battleground, Alterac Valley. The Broken I.W.I.N Button description says, “If only it worked.”

5Spare Hand

There’s a small chance that this item will drop from an undead humanoid in the wastes of Icecrown, the headquarters of the Scourge in Northrend. A grey item, which means it’s the lowest grade of stuff there is, but the rarity of the drop and the funny item description make it stand out from the other piles of junk cluttering the Auction House.

In a game about grouping up and helping others, the description here has a meaning both true and comical, “Give to a friend.”

4Ravager Dog

There area lot of wacky cooking recipesin Azeroth, and sometimes these exotic dishes have descriptions that are just as entertaining. The composition of certain foods is already a running joke in real life, and most people have heard cringe-worthy stories of what goes into making hot dogs.

This joke carries over into an entrée known as Ravager Dog, and if that sounds suspicious, wait until you read the description; “Don’t ask what it’s made of.”

3Bowels And Brains Bowl

“Feedin' Da Goolz” requires you to ensure that certain undead slaves, in this case the ghouls, get their daily ration. This is a food item that’s only available during a certain quest chain in Zul’Drak, and the description of the item is short, to the point, and funny.

“Num, num, num!” It’s only three words, and they aren’t even words, but it’s hard not to laugh.

2Soap On A Rope

The vendor who sells this item, along with many who like it, even has a joke name, “Griftah”. All of the weird things he sells are useless except for their entertainment value, and that includes funny descriptions.

Let’s face it, the Soap on a Rope is probably a not-so-subtle dig at the gamer stereotype who gets so immersed in the game that they neglect basic personal hygiene. “Adventuring is no excuse for being filthy. Now you can carry your soap wherever you go!” Sage advice.

1Extra Large Grooming Comb

This is a joke that only Warcraft players will understand, and it’s only available in retail, which has both the Gilneas zone and the Worgen race. There’s nothing funny about an extra large comb by itself, but this one also has a description that says, “Stamped with Made in Gilneas City.”

What’s so hairy about Gilneas? Well, the Worgen, a race of werewolves that were introduced in the Cataclysm expansion. Of course, they’re going to need some extra large hair care products, right? Har har, very funny, Blizzard!
