World of Warcraftis crammed with quests, yet so many past tasks are now inaccessible, since Cataclysm quite literally changed the world. LuckilyWorld of Warcraft Classichas helped save these stories that may otherwise have been lost to time. You can now re-experience having to kill what felt like hundreds of mobs before you can even leave the starting area, but that’s not the only thing you may well wish had been left in the past.

We take a look at some of most memorable World of Warcraft Classic quests, but not all of them will be fond memories. Some serve up engaging narratives that stick in your mind, others offer a unique reward, and at least one of them you’ll likely remember mostly by the amount of times the quest name was spammed in chat, along with a link to the infamous Dirge dagger.
Lost In Battle
If I ask, “do you remember the quest Lost In Battle?” then I imagine I may get a lot of blank stares. However, if I ask “do you know where to find Mankrik’s wife?” then the answer is probably very different. This simple sounding quest was often picked up by Horde players making their way to Orgrimmar. All you had to do was find Mankrik’s wife, who he fears has been killed during a battle. Sounds simple, right?
Well, the first problem with the quest is that Mankrik gives you absolutely zero clues whatsoever, so unless you had a quest navigation mod like tomtom, you were on your own. The second is that not only is she quite far away, especially for a new character walking 40 levels uphill, but she is actually dead. This means you are actually hunting for some bones labeled ‘beaten corpse’ which are both inconspicuous and unexpected. These factors combined to mean “where is Mankrik’s wife?” was asked so often in the Barrens chat that the quest became notorious.
Wanted: Hogger
Meanwhile, those playing Alliance had their own notorious early game quest chain involving a level 11 Elite Gnoll called Hogger. He was the first Elite mob most players encountered, and high on finally escaping the starter area, many would ignore the suggestion on the quest text of assembling a group and wander off alone.

The thing is Hogger hits first and asks questions later, usually to your corpse. The difference in his strength and the requirement of extra players and/or solid tactics and some decent gear to defeat him was a shock to the system. Deaths to him became so common that in Wrath of the Lich King, Deaths To Hogger became a recorded statistic.
Morgan Stern
Comprising three quests that start in Stormwind City, this quest chain can be picked up at level 33 and swiftly sends you to Dustwallow Marsh, an area designed for levels 36 - 61. Also, remember that you are walking there as well. No mounts before level 40 in Classic! You’ll certainly remember this journey, as you’ll need to head across the Barrens, you know that zone with all the Horde characters in it? Then go through the one entrance to Dustwallow Marsh and get ready to corpse run all the way to Theramore Isle.
Here you’ll be asked to collect eight Forked Mudrock Tongues, followed by 12 Pristine Crawler Legs, and the drop rate is atrocious. It takes ages, and you’ll need to be very careful about pulling due to the mob levels. Only once both these collection quests are done can you report back to Stormwind and be rewarded with… a Moist Towelette. No we aren’t joking, and the randomness and uselessness of the reward combined with the sheer difficulty level is what makes this quest so memorable.
The Greenhills Of Strangethorn
If you head on over to see Barnil Stonepot by the river in Northern Strangethorn Vale he will bestow upon you The Green Hills of Strangethorn. This quest involves collecting 15 random pages from the book of the same name. The good thing is that the pages aren’t bind on pickup so can be sold or traded. The bad thing is that if you are right level for this quest that feature is of limited use.

If you do attempt this quest make sure you know which pages you need to collect. There are four from chapters one, two from chapter three and three from chapter four and each one has a different random page number between one and 27. Then get your grinding hat on as in Classic these suckers have a low drop rate. It’s also worth noting that some always seemed very rare in comparison. Often times chat would be full of people offering pages 14, 24, and 26, if only they can get page 11. Of course page 11 would be available somewhere, but that somewhere was usually the Booty Bay auction house on sale for an extortionate amount, since gold was harder to farm then, so you took every chance you could to make a quick buck.
Attunement To Onyxia’s Lair
These days any old orc can walk straight into Onyxia’s Lair and take down this fearsome foe. However, back in the olden days you had a follow a long and complicated quest chain if you wanted to get in on an Onyxia raid. The Alliance quests started in Burning Steppes and required you to complete different tasks in Redridge Mountains, Stormwind City, and Winterspring. You also needed to run the Blackrock Depths and Blackrock Spire dungeons. Meanwhile, the Horde quests began in Badlands and covered Desolace, Dustwallow Marsh, Tanaris, Winterspring, Swamp of Sorrows, Wetlands, and Orgrimmar. The dungeon requirements were Lower and Upper Blackrock Spire.
If you were in a guild you’d soon become proficient at running the required dungeons, especially if you were a tank or healer. Finding a group was much harder then, since the dungeon finder didn’t exist, so you’d be relying on spamming chat or spamming your guild. Hours of questing, especially for horde members, who faced a longer trek, to get your hands on a Drakefire Amulet. Even once you had it you’d inevitably have to hang around on raid night for someone else to grab one, even if it was just from their bank where they’d left it.
All this hassle and you were rewarded with a walk down a hill and one boss to defeat. Granted, Onyxia is a very awesome boss, but actually we’re not sure if we miss this one. We certainly remember it though.
